We spent a day in Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh Province, the old capital of Vietnam between the 10th and 11th century. They described this province as the Ha Long Bay in land, and it actually is! The province is surrounded by mountains and hills. While the scenery reminded me of New Zealand, Ninh Binh still has its unique character that is incomparable.

Bích Động Pagoda, within the Ninh Binh province of Vietnam consists of three layered pagodas, each used as Buddhist shrines. The air is thick with incense and hushed speech, a complement to the verdant cliffside and rice-terraced countryside that surround. I arrived at the site in the early morning, cutting my motorbike to walk across the stone bridge through the pagoda gate. As I was taking my first steps, however, two stray dogs pushed past me, as if assuming positions of welcome. They walked ahead of me, looking back from time to time to make sure I was following course. Vietnam is surreal in many ways and here exemplifies one of those times, standing four-legged before the ancient architecture.
