Robert Porterfield, founder of the theatre, offered admittance by letting the local people pay with food goods, hence the name "Barter". If those walls could talk! So much history in this beautiful hotel. I loved the display of historic artifacts on the walls. It really helps connect the history of the women’s college to the current hotel. We so enjoyed our stay. The pool is wonderful! And, the creaky old floors in the lobby—love them!

Great place for a trip with friends

This was our second trip to The Martha. We had a group of 4 couples. The facility is very clean. The staff are always asking how they can help. They are very friendly. The owner even took time on several occasions during our stay to visit with us and chat. The dinner was excellent! Breakfast was the standard continental breakfast. We enjoyed the hot tub and our group had a blast playing putt putt. I love the little courtyard outside of the dinning room. It is beautifully decorated and peaceful. If you have trouble with stairs, ask for a ground floor room. We worked off our great food walking up and down to get to our room. Parking is very convenient, safe and spacious. The beautiful large front porch is a great place to relax while waiting for friends before walking down the street to enjoy the rest of town.

Food was delicious at Sister’s. Enjoyed complimentary port after dinner with the owner. He was delightful, and extended our checkout so we could return to hotel after bike ride on VA Creeper Trail. We will return to The Martha.

Lots of atmosphere

Wonderful stay with lost of atmosphere- very nice facilities - we enjoyed both the pool and a mini-golf game. If you have extra time The Virginia Creeper trail is highly recommend as well as dining at the Tavern.

A little disappointed

This was a special stay us, a mix of business and pleasure. Our room's TV didn't work- the porter tried to fix it but it still malfunctioned. Our room didn't have glasses. You have to get ice from the receptionist. The breakfast was included but was only packaged foods and hard boiled eggs! So disappointing at such a fine hotel. We have more opportunities to go to Abington, but don't know if we will chose the Marth Washington.

150 year old resort with a rich history that has a wide variety of offerings for your enjoyment, on and off site. We happened to arrive at a time when there were some unexpected facility issues. The staff was gracious and accommodating in making sure we were able to enjoy our visit to "The Martha".

Valet the only reason to stay

We had to change rooms due to the mildew smell in the first was awful and affected my allergies. The second room was much better however nothing had been dusted/cleaned. Countertops had crumbs and “rings” from old drinks on them. We had to ask for towels and TP three times. Finally got the towels but had to get our own TP. Love the history of the place but the $ to stay here- it could be much better condition and cleanliness wise. Valet guys were amazing though!

Elegant historical decor. Clean and well maintained. Close to the Creep Trail, Barter theatre, and downtown. On site restaurant was very good. Enjoyed the hot tub and the hotel grounds.

The city of Abingdon and The Martha Washington Inn and Spa was absolutely amazing. If you are looking for a place to relax and just enjoy the peacefulness of a "small town" feel, this is definitely the place for you.
