For up to 5 people (or 4 adults plus 4 children) for 3-7 nights
(For this escape transport is not required. Guests have unlimited use of 4 bicycles and there are tram stations 1/2 km from house, with direct connection with nearby city of Valencia. Bars and restaurants are within easy reach.
Lead the lifestyle of an authentic Valencian farmer while enjoying a peaceful and comfortable stay in a converted 19th century alquería (a silk maker’s farmstead) in the huerta of Valencia (Europe’s largest agricultural plains). In ancient times, the cool sea breeze of the huerta dried silk and tobacco in these traditional Valencian homesteads.
Now you can enjoy the luxuries of a comfortable bed, a roll top bath air conditioning and wifi with an open fire blazing in the winter, while looking out over the orange groves and fields full of artichokes and in the summer, the chufa leaves sway like a sea of green when viewed from the terrace. Chufa or tiger nuts make a local milk called horchata which is a speciality of Valencia. Learn how this refreshing drink is made and enjoy it with a delicious pastry called a farton in an horchatería just across the fields.
Valencia is the home of paella. Have fun learning to make your own and opt to pick up some traditional Valencian cooking skills from one of the locals, who will show you where the rice comes from. Pick your own artichokes and beans to add from your garden while you cook the paella on your terrace.
Cycle the 20 km route around the huerta which runs along the ancient ´Camino del Cid´, a track that joined Valencia to Taragona, Burgos and Sopria, from Roman times. Or choose the flat one km country lane that leads across the fields to the beach and a busy bar full of bars, restaurants and a shopping centre. Or venture further afield into the mountains from where you can climb a rocky outcrop and enjoy spectacular views of the plains and sea.
Spend the morning on the sandy beaches that stretch either side of the city and the afternoon aboard a traditional eel fishing boat on the largest wetland in Europe. Look out for herons amongst the reeds trying to catch fish in the warm waters of the Albufera.
Catch a tram and explore the vibrant and historic city of Valencia or cycle to a country train station to catch a train to Sagunto, to see its amphitheatre and Roman walled citadel. Or visit the magnificent Moorish castle of Xativa and a local winery, amongst the orange groves of Gandía.
Take a relaxed walk at sunset (maybe with a donkey for company) or opt to spin over the local country lanes in a horse-drawn carriage, to explore the delights of the huerta and learn more about the rich history of this fertile land.
