Corazones Draw Ranch: Two Homes on 400 acres

Summary:
Corazones Draw Ranch: Spacious Ranch House PLUS a Casita. 400 acres of Desert Wildlands.

The Space:
EXTRA FEES MAY APPLY. These might not appear in quote and will be added if applicable.
Extra Space Cleaning Fee: $85 per stay if the Casita is used.
The Casita is required for groups larger than seven or optional for any groups wanting extra space.

Corazones Draw Ranch is a 400 acre wildlife ranch with two homes and lots of acreage to roam and explore. Dozens of Mule Deer visit the wildlife water guzzler and feeding station behind the main house daily. This listing is for the ENTIRE Ranch, including both homes.

Groups are welcome. Occupancy inside the Ranch House is limited to seven. The Adobe Casita can house four more. There is a nominal cleaning fee for use of the Casita.

RANCH HOUSE DETAILS: The Ranch House has a fully stocked kitchen with a dining area, comfortable living room, an enclosed porch with a bar, a private game shack, two full bathrooms, and three bedrooms. All the beds and linens are brand new as of November 2018. The master bedroom has a king bed and a private bathroom. The second bedroom has a queen bed and a twin bed. The third bedroom has a queen bed.

The enclosed Bar Porch at the Ranch House is an enclosed porch with three screened archways for fresh air. With a bar and a variety of seating options, the porch is a great place to hang out, relax, share meals, or drinks at any time and in virtually any weather.

The private Game Shack at the Ranch House is detached but connected by a semi-enclosed breezeway. This rustic outbuilding has two windows overlooking a feeding and watering area for native wildlife. On most mornings and evenings, guests can watch mule deer and javelina come in for a drink or to feed. It is common to see herds of well over a dozen at a time. Tables, chairs, a small collection of games, and a large drink cooler also make this a great place to hang out. Since it is separated from the main house, it is a great place for night owls to get a little rowdy without worrying about disturbing friends or family sleeping in the main house.

ADOBE CASITA DETAILS: This one-bedroom guest house is a classic southwestern adobe home with a fully stocked kitchenette, open living space with dining area and living room, a full bathroom, one bedroom with two queen beds, and a Spanish style covered patio with mountain views framed by adobe archways. The Casita sits on a hilltop, a half mile from the Ranch House, with breathtaking views of Corazones Draw Ranch and the surrounding mountains.

COVERED PARKING: There is covered parking for up to three vehicles and lots of room for additional vehicle or trailers.

EXCLUSIVE RANCH ACCESS: As renters of Corazones Draw Ranch, you will have exclusive access to over 400 acres of private Chihuahuan Desert wilderness. The property includes rugged hills, canyons, wet weather creeks, including the scenic Corazones Draw, and abundant wildlife. Wild game has been protected and provided with year-round water and feed on this property for several years. Deer and Javelina are commonly seen near the house. Aoudad Sheep are occasionally seen in the rugged hills and ridges. Hunting is not allowed.

INQUIRIES WELCOME: Call or email us with any questions. We are eager to know how you would like to use the Ranch and we are committed to exceeding your expectations.

The Neighborhood:
TERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas.

Back in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country.

People have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.

The landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises.

The Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)

Big Bend Vacation Rentals started out in 2007 and initially managed three of the first four vacation rentals in the Terlingua and Terlingua Ranch area. We now manage dozens out of a couple of hundred options. We represent dozens of property owners and have hosted tens of thousands of guests. You can trust us as managers, and you can rely on the properties that we manage. We have become very selective about the properties and the property owners that we add to our portfolio. Great place to unplug!
If your looking for a remote place to unplug and rest your head in between Big Bend adventures, this is it! The house had all the accommodations we needed. We traveled with my family of five and our friends, a family of three. We stayed in the main house, plenty of comfy beds for our family. The casita acclimated my friends family well. One thing we loved was NO TV’s! We drove out everyday to explore BB and near by towns, and came back for sunsets, sleep and beautiful sunrises. The star gazing was magnificent. Bring your telescope if you want but you don’t have to have one to enjoy that kind of sky. There is NO cell phone signal close to the property, so be sure to find it in the day light the first time if you can. The road to the casita is steep and is a dirt/rock road but completely doable in a midsize suv. We would definitely stay at the Corazones ranch again!

Really secluded property north of Terlingua
We were in the area mainly for night photography and this property was perfect. It was in a really secluded valley north of Terlingua and at night we could literally not see another light in any direction. It was perfect for us. It was definitely a longer drive to get back to Terlingua but we just planned out day to only go out once a day. It was worth the extra drive. The view from the Casita was the perfect spot for watching sunsets.

Really get away in the desert mountains
We enjoyed staying at this property. It is way out there, which was great for the 4 of us. Very nice interior decor honoring native ancestors. The beautiful scenery was hilly desert acreage surrounded by various mountains. Very clean inside and comfortable. Recommend larger profile vehicles like suvs and pickups for the last few miles of unpaved road.

Off grid with comfort
This place was spectacular. An off-grid feel without the discomfort of really off-grid living which was important for our stay with my older parents and one year old niece. The host communicated quickly and was kind. It was easy to feel at home with many amenities. It is quite the drive from the park but we didn’t mind it but something to be aware of. Because it is tucked way into the mountains you are working WITH the environment. We did see mice in the home but personally we didn’t mind, it is something to be expected. We just made sure to clean up well after dinner and seal all our non refrigerated foods and we didn’t have any problems. This is a great place to unwind from the world and achieve deep relaxation! We loved our time together there!

Big Bend Vacation 2021
Our family and friends enjoyed 3 nights stay at Corazones Draw Ranch while visiting Big Bend. There were enough utensils in the kitchen for a big group (11 people). The house and the casita were clean when we checked in. The beds were comfortable too. The property is very quiet/private. I had originally planned to do some astrophotography, but the weather gods were not favorable. However, on one night we did get a small window to marvel the night sky. The moonrise above the casita was spectacular too. Because of terrain and views from horizon to horizon, it would be astroimagers dream. The house is quite ways off from main highway and 40/50 min to the national park (but it's common in Big Bend area to have such distances). There was a problem with the bathroom in casita one day, but it was promptly addressed. The drive to casita from the main house is steep and even though 4x4 is not required, I would recommend it. The last 4 miles or so from TX118 to the house is unpaved. We planned to arrive during the daylight to avoid any problem as there is cell phone coverage. Overall, we are happy with our stay.

A place of solitude and hospitality
Clean and welcoming property. We used both the main house and casita. Everything functions just fine. Quite a drive to get there from the main road 118, but it is true spirit of big bend experience. No neighbors nearby. Quiet. Solitary. Really, really dark and beautiful night sky with thousands of stars. Recommended!

Enjoyed Corazones Draw Property
Our family & friend group of 8 thoroughly enjoyed our 4-day/5-night at Corazones Draw. Beautiful property. The house was clean. Beds were comfortable. No sulfur smell during showers, washing dishes, etc. We cooked all our meals for the stay and had almost everything we needed for cooking in the kitchen. Plenty of drinking water (1-gallon containers) available. The WiFi was strong enough for 8 people on devices with one working on a college class and another working on their laptop researching. The drive to the Casita was uphill with spots of gravel/rock. 4x4 is not required, but helpful. It took 30 minutes from the entrance of the Terlingua Road neighborhood to the house, so plan accordingly. When we left in the morning we didn't return until late afternoon or evening, so this limited our trips in/out of the house. Whenever we needed anything Daryl responded within minutes. I recommend this property to any family who is looking to visit the Big Bend area. I would stay at this home again.

Family Vacation
Our stay at this location was overall a pleasant and good experience. The property location is remote and quite lovely. The views are wonderful and the star viewing is fantastic. It is important to note that this is a very remote location, as stated, and even with it being accurate as a 45 minute drive from the park entrance, there isn't much to do at that entrance. The trails are all double if not more than that time frame, so just be prepared for that. The house itself is cool, beds are comfortable and the washing machine and dryer was a nice added bonus. My only critique was that it wasn't super clean. There were old coffee grounds in the coffee maker, dirty towels in the washing machine and several cobwebs, dead bugs around the house. I wouldn't state it as a "dirty" house by any means but I'm simply stating it could have been cleaner. Overall, this was a good experience.

Remote, Quiet Getaway
As an astrophotographer who has been to Terlingua/Big Bend several times, this property was excellent. Remote and secluded from other people and light intrusion. For reference we stayed in June 2021. Other reviews mentioned bad smelling water and other inconveniences. We did not experience that. The tap water was fine for showering and washing dishes, probably drinking too, but since the owners provided ample bottled gallons of water we availed ourselves of that convenience. We used both the main house and the Casita. Other reviews complain about the distance/terrain to reach the Casita. Yes, it is farther and steeper than most people will want to walk, but if you're into hiking you can do it. However, it is easily drivable in an SUV or Truck, you don't need a 4X4. I would not recommend driving in an average sedan, but if you're careful it can be done. The drive up has large gravel and is quite bumpy, which may be uncomfortable in a standard passenger car. But because we read the details of the property before booking, have a truck, and understand what we're getting, it was no problem for us. If you are booking this property, or any property in Terlingua, understand that you coming to a remote desert climate. Conveniences are hard to come by, however this property is close to the Terlingua Ranch Lodge where you can find a restaurant, ice, and a pool (for a fee $8.50pp/day-Children under certain ages may be free). Sunsets at this property are amazing! If you're booking a stay here, book during a new moon for the most brilliant skies and view of the Milky Way. We observed lots of wildlife on the property including deer, coyotes, and even a rattlesnake (yes you need to used caution out here). As the details state, there is not central A/C in the casita, it is a two room house with a Kitchenette/Living space and 1 bedroom. When we arrived there was only a wall mounted AC in the living space which was not cooling the bedroom. However, as soon as I informed the owners that there was not sufficient cooling in the bedroom they had a maintenance person out within a few hours and installed a window unit. The space was immediately improved and we were comfortable for the rest of our stay. I was really quite surprised at the speed of the resolution. If you have any issue, they are extremely responsive. We're already considering our next trip to Terlingua and CDR is at the top of the list. A great property if you want remote, peace and quiet.

Artist's Haven!
I traveled with several other artists to the Big Bend area for a paint out. We stayed a full week. The property was beautiful enough for us to have painted all week at Carazones Draw but we were scheduled for other spots within the Parks to meet with other artists. The remoteness, the dark skies and the beauty of the property were all enchanting. The house and Casita were very comfortable and clean. The extra rooms and porches were soooo comfortable and supplied a great place for us all to share our work and a bottle of wine. The biggest negative was the long drive to get from there to the parks and other locations. Had circumstance not required us to meet up wit other artists during the paint out within the state and national parks, the remoteness would not have been a problem but having many scheduled events that required an hour to hour and a half drive was a little tiring. However, we enjoyed our stay very much and found the linens, beds and kitchen equipment all well above average for a rental. Thanks for everything!

Lovely, quiet cottage!
We had a great time at Corazones Draw! I don’t think the photos do it justice, but the three bedrooms are spacious and very clean, and the living space and kitchen are comfortable and work well. The kitchen was well appointed, and the beds and linens were very comfortable. But what was most impressive was the location. It’s a good ways off the main road, but what you get with that is silence. It’s so peaceful! And the skies at night are incredible — as are the daytime views. Owners were very easy to work with. Highlight of our trip to Big Bend.

comfortable home, but far from park
The home was well-stocked with what we needed, including drinking water (non-potable water at the house). The beds were comfortable and the linens clean. The mileage to destinations listed are "as the crow flies", NOT taking roads. It took 25 minutes just to get from the house to the main road 118, then another 20-25 to get to the entrance of Big Bend. The owners were very helpful and responsive to any questions we had.

A much needed vacation under the dark skies
With all is going on this year, this is a much needed vacation for me to get away from the chaos and enjoy my passion for a few days. Corazones Draw Ranch is for natures lovers that don't mind driving a few miles further down the gravel road to get to the true isolation and rugged beauty the big bend area is famous for. At the time, Big Bend National Park is closed. But it did not impact my vacation at all as this 400 acre property is a miniature version of the Big Bend National Park. The trails to the the Casita and beyond offer the same spectacular views you would get from inside the national park. And the night sky, all I can say is WOW the summer Milyway shines like ceiling light. The home is basic and very spacious. It does have all the comfort features like central A/C, well water etc. which are rare in this area as a lot of vacation homes are off grid. Internet a bit slow but adequate to basic use. Property manager Daryl is a pleasure to work with, very responsive to my questions and requests. I had a great time here and took some very beautiful night sky pictures including the very rare Comet Neowise. I plan to be back again in the near future!

Beautiful location on 400 acres of privacy
As the crow files, extremely close to Big Bend National Park so you will get to enjoy the same landscape except without the crowds. The property has excellent views of the Corazones Peaks and the property managers keep the wildlife (like deer) watered and fed and the animals come out most mornings and evenings. There are also plenty of hiking trails with a variety of terrain. The house is very clean and well equipped for cooking and can accommodate larger groups. The property manager Daryl is friendly and responsive. Definitely a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the Big Bend area on a ranch scale.

Clean, comfortable, spacious, and nice views!
We used this rental as our home base while visiting g Big Bend NP. This place was clean and spacious for 5 adults. The rental has a rustic cabin vibe like most rentals in the area. We never got to use the other two bonus spaces (Bar porch and game room) since we usually got back tired from hiking all day. Everyone said the beds were comfortable and slept well. The kitchen was well stocked with the basic utensils necessary for cooking our breakfast. We did have an issue the day we arrived with a sulfur smell that came from the water well system. Daryl was very prompt in responding to the problem and knew exactly how to fix it. After fixing the problem we didn’t have any other issues. We truly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this rental to friends and family.

Great property for groups but they need to fix the sulfur smell in the water
Note that we rented both the House and the nearby Casita for our group hiking trip to Big Bend National Park in March 2019. Pros: - The sunsets, sunrises and stars are spectacular in this remote location. - The house has a lot of personality, great art, and comfortable furniture and beds. - When combined with rental of the nearby Casita, the two properties can accommodate a larger group. - The kitchen offers quality cooking pots, pans and provisions (although it could use a large bowl for mixing). Cons: - Not recommended for guests planning to go back and forth to Big Bend every day. It is a minimum 1 and 1/2 hour drive to the closest Visitor Center. - The sulfur smell in the water is really unpleasant and overpowering, especially when showering. The smell was so strong that it nauseated one of our guests and she elected to walk up the hill to the Casita to shower instead. It also put a damper on cooking and dinners (although we used bottled water, we still had to wash the dishes.) This problem is usually fixable and we have notified the manager and asked them to work with the owner to address, 2) The road up to the Casita from the house needs to be dozed. The rocks are so large and sharp that they punctured a tire on one of our vehicles, causing a slow leak. Luckily, another of our guests had an air pump in his truck but it was a nuisance to have to fill up the tire every day before and after we returned from Big Bend. We have notified the manager of this issue as well. 3) The password in the provided pdf instructions and the subsequent password provided over email did not work for the Casita. The regular phone in the House did not work either. This was a nuisance as the two homes are a good 15 - 20 minute walk apart (for marathon runners like us even!) and it was difficult to communicate and coordinate dinners and schedules. We notified the manager. Overall these two properties have lots of potential and we hope these challenges will be addressed. Despite them, we had a fabulous time hiking in Big Bend!
