  • Ritipanna is the Sinhalese term for stilt fishing, which is a traditional method for fishing practiced by most fishermen along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. This art is popularly seen in areas such as Ahangama, Koggala, Welipenna, Kathaluwa and Thalarambe. A narrow pole is tied to a stick that is anchored on the sea bed. Fisher folk climb onto this stick and settle on the pole for a few hours in an effort to catch some fish. Fishermen found on stilts are those who do not have access to sophisticated equipment for fishing. These men can make a living simply with the help of two wooden poles to make a stilt. One pole is nailed onto the sea bed and the other is placed like a cross bar and acts as a plank for the fishermen to sit on. Each stilt can accommodate only one fisherman. For catching fish, they create a rod made of Kithul, and a small plastic bag is tied around their waist to hold the fish that they catch. With one hand they hold onto the stilt and with the other they hold the rod that catches fish. The tradition of stilt fishing will always be practiced by those who cannot afford to invest in modern fishing equipment. #likealocal

From the moment we arrived at Kahanda Kanda Hotel, our experience felt like stepping into a tropical paradise. The scenic drive from the gate to the reception is a beautiful prelude to what this enchanting property has to offer. Every aspect of our stay was nothing short of magical. We celebrated our 23rd anniversary in the DUBU honeymoon villa, and it exceeded every expectation we had. Our days were blissfully spent lounging in our private pool, enjoying leisurely meals served poolside, and reading in the soothing shade. While we ventured out to explore the local beaches and diving spots, our favorite moments were simply spent soaking in the serene beauty of Kahanda Kanda itself. “Magical moments” is the perfect description of our time here, and we are immensely grateful to the incredible staff who went above and beyond to make our stay truly unforgettable. Thank you, Kahanda Kanda, for a dream-like anniversary getaway!

Beautiful place with great restaurant

We really enjoyed our stay at KK. The place is truly beautiful and tastefully decorated. The restaurant is good with a varied menu. However, I would not recommend the KK Plantation Suite – Garden room, as it lacks privacy.

Amazing hotel. Staff superb attentive but unobtrusive. Our lodge was to die for, every comfort catered for. Breakfasts delicious and freshly prepared. Evening meal was variable. Our first meal was probably a 7 out of 10, the second 8.5/10 similarly the last.

We enjoyed our stay at Kahanda Kanda. It is a small resort and on arrival were shown to our room, the Garden room which was nice on first impression. However we woke to find ants all over our bed which was not acceptable. Housekeeping promptly changed the bedding but within half an hour they were back so we were moved for our second night to the Mango room. There was no comparison between the two rooms as the first had been dark with no view and the second was lighter with a veranda overlooking the tea plantation. We felt happier with the change and it was thankfully ant free! Breakfast was lovely sitting overlooking the jungle and watching wild monkeys swinging through the trees. Food was ok with a set menu or à la carte. We were transferred to the sister hotel KK Beach by tuk tuk for a few nights to finish our holiday and guests have the option of going to the beach resort for the day. It is nice you can alternate between the two.

Super gepflegtes Paradies inmitten eines wucherenden Dschugels. Der Besitzer, ein Designer, hat die wenigen Pavillons mit größter Sorgfalt und ästhetischem Verständnis individuell bis ins letzte Detail gestaltet. Der Aufenthalt, wenn auch hochpreisig, in jeder Minute ein Vergnügen. Wir hatten einen Pavillon mit eigenem Pool, der auch zur Vogeltränke seltener Vögel gerne genutzt wurde.

Perfect place to rest

After a week touring the island, we just wanted somewhere to rest and relax. We could not have found anything better. Beautifully decorated private villa with pool, each one well apart so totally tranquil. The service was impeccable, excellent massage, variety of evening food experiences, first class local and international cuisine. All in a tea plantation setting with a wide variety of wildlife passing through. Just memorable

We don’t normally write reviews but particularly wanted to this time as we had such a great experience at Kahanda Kanda. We even ended up staying two more nights than originally planned as we moved to another hotel which just didn’t compare to KK (so moved back!). Everything 5* - location, rooms and facilities, service (nothing is too much of an ask), food and drinks. Complete luxury and comfort but in a setting which feels in the middle of nature and the whole team make you feel at home. Couldn’t recommend more.

ロケーションと部屋は最高！

一番下のカテゴリーのお部屋に2泊しましたが、窓からのロケーションも含めお部屋はとにかく最高でした。 惜しむらくは食事。朝食の内容もごくごく平凡だし、夕食に至っては内容と値段が見合わないと感じました。肝心のスリランカカレーも外国人向けの味付けにしているからなのか美味しくありませんでした。そこらへんのローカルレストランのほうがずっとおいしかったです。シェフはスリランカ人ではないのかも？　 また、朝食（オーダー式）は7：30からとのことで、7：40くらいにうかがったのですが、待てど暮らせどスタッフが誰もこず、結局呼びに行き、朝食がすべてサーブされたのは席に座ってから40分後！　雨季でゲストが少なかったから適当な対応だったのか？　お部屋は本当にステキなのにいろいろ残念なホテルでした

Great property but shame about the food and tear jerking prices - poor quality and limited, so yourself a favour stay here for sure but eat elsewhere (don’t do the buffet dinner, disappointing!)

휴식만을 위한 훌륭한 공간

콜롬보에서 승용차로 2시간 30분 정도 걸림. 개인적으로 찾아가기 어려우므로 택시를 미리 예약하고 가는 것이 좋은데, 콜롬보에서는 80달러, 콜롬보공항에서는 90달러(이상 통행료 포함) 정도로 갈 수 있음. 치약/치솔 있음, 면도기/빗 없음, 오전과 저녁 턴다운 서비스. 직원들이 모두 매우 친절함. 다만 식사 수준이 기대에 다소 못미침(나쁘지는 않음). 그리고 숙박 중 하루는 저녁에 스리랑카 전통 뷔페식이 나왔는데, 투숙객에 따라서는 스리랑카 전통음식이 입에 맞지 않을 수 있다는 점을 고려해야 할 필요가 있음. 풀이 달린 빌라를 이용했는데, 대형 모스크도마뱀이 물을 먹기 위해 등장하는 바람에 놀랐음. 사람에게 해를 끼치지는 않는다고 하고 직원이 와서 물리쳐 주었으나, 도마뱀이 먹던 물에서 수영하는 것은 좀 찜찜한 면이 없지 않음. 주변에 시간을 보낼 공간이 없고 차를 타고 나가야만 하는데, 그것이 이 숙소의 매력이자 단점이기도 함. 숲속에 자리잡은 스리랑카 최고의 리조트이나, 사람마다 호불호가 있을 것 같음.

Beautiful setting, stunning villas, great food and wonderful staff. Sitting on our massive verandah watching monkeys playing in the trees was amazing - a real highlight of our trip.

Best of three hotels

My daughter and I travelled Sri Lanka over two weeks staying at three 5* hotels... this was the best of the three, largely due to the lovely staff that made our experience there really special. Warm, friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, but didn’t get in your way and genuine nice people. Beautiful and super clean rooms, great food and quiet, off-the-beaten-track location. Thoroughly enjoyed the excursions they arranged for us including dinner at their hip sister hotel on the beach. I would love to go back.

Amazing hotel

My stay was amazing. From the time I walked in, I felt welcome and was given superb attention to. Dinner was great and so was everything else. My only regret is that I Did not stay longer

Fantastic staff and service, beautiful rooms. We were lucky enough to try 3 different rooms during our stay and all were stunning. The best staff and service we encountered during our two week tour of Sri Lanka. Coming from central Tokyo we were mesmerized by the experiences with nature available in our garden or from our terrace - a family of monkeys playing in the tree above, peacocks fraternizing besides your table, fireflies surrounding you at night or a lady plucking tea just 30 meters away from your poolside - all are very 'normal' day-to-day experiences at KK that amazed us city dwellers. The only minor disappointment was the food - dinners were enjoyable enough if a little expensive for what they were - whilst I would say breakfast was fine. Lunch was the biggest disappointment - a very standard club sandwich or salad for around USD 15 (including service/tax) would be the usual menu. This hotel is so full of "WOW" factor in terms of the design, the rooms, the pools and the service but we were not once "wowed" by anything that we ate which was a shame. Eating at KK was more like a means to not to feel hungry anymore rather than a special dining experience.
