About this property
Big Red House - Historic Bangor Home
Welcome to the Big Red House, located in the Whitney Park Historic District in Bangor! We’ve made some upgrades and renovations and are excited to share them with you. Pine ceilings have been added, as well as new furniture, memory foam gel mattress toppers, and a renovated master bathroom. Built c. 1869, the BRH is one of the Queen City’s oldest homes. Once owned by sea captains and the father of a US Treasurer, the BRH is the perfect place to stay to experience Bangor, the once lumber capital of the world and one of the busiest ports on the East Coast. Visit the Penobscot Reservation on Indian Island near Old Town (about 20 minutes to the north) to learn about Maine's Penobscot Tribe. And the Bangor Historical Society down the street will shed light on Bangor's French, Irish, and English history.
At the 2600 sf. Big Red House, you'll enjoy a huge eat-in kitchen, 4 bedrooms (2 queen and 2 twin) - our downstairs office has a twin daybed and can be closed off to use as a bedroom, and upstairs laundry, pellet stove, garage, central heat, and private driveway. It's close to downtown, too! Great for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families, and groups. A hop, skip and a jump away from lobster pounds, hiking trails, local theaters, shopping, dining, historical churches, museums, Hollywood Slots casino, and skiing. Check out the Bangor Waterfront along the Penobscot River, and Author, Stephen King's house located right down the street. Dogs welcome (no other pets, please.) And enjoy an edible gift from us to you just for choosing the BRH! The BRH is a non-smoking property.
(Note: This property is equipped with exterior cameras and any illegal activity is reported directly to local police. Thank you for respecting the BRH.)

The BRH was perfect for my entire family. All up for the weekend for a family wedding. Saved us money on hotel rooms for sure.
Cindy was very responsive to all my inquiries. There is not one thing I can think of that we weren't happy with.
Cozy, clean... Even found pins for an emergency last minute dress malfunction.
Had a wonderful time and would definitely come back.
My family stayed for a college visit to the University of Maine. The location was very convenient and very comfortable. If available for future dates I will be in town I will definitely stay there.
The house was beautiful and well-maintained, and had ample space for four adults and a large dog. Cindy was responsive and helpful throughout our stay, from check-in until the time we left. We felt welcomed from the moment we stepped into the Big Red House and truly enjoyed our “home away from home”!
We only stayed one night at the big red house, but we absolutely loved it and wished we had booked at least another night! So comfortable, clean, spacious, everything we could need for a fabulous night. We will definitely stay there again when we’re visiting Bangor. Thank you so much!

Bangor Was the Perfect Hub
We had a wonderful time. Bangor is great to take day trips and has some really great restaurants. Our accommodations were good. We wished there had been dressers, closets or armoires for hanging and storing clothes Otherwise, the house was lovely and very nice.
Was fun staying in a home built in the latter 1800s. The kitchen though was completely modern. The home was quite clean and near to the sites we wished to see in Bangor.
We loved the house. We stayed here once before in 2021. The whole process was smooth, communication was wonderful, house was spotless and comfortable, hosts are easygoing and very reasonable with no fussy rules. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you so much!
We had a wonderful stay at The Big Red House in Bangor! The home was spacious yet cozy, providing a welcoming atmosphere perfect for families or groups. The location couldn’t be better—just 10 minutes from anywhere in Bangor, making it easy to explore the area. The house was impeccably clean, and the kitchen was well-stocked with everything we needed to prepare meals. Check-out was a breeze, with a simple process that was especially appreciated after a long trip. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a comfortable, convenient place to stay in Bangor!
We were in town for a concert and the location was perfect . We will definitely stay here again and will recommend to friends and family. Lots of space, very clean and well appointed. Thank you Cindy!!!!
The photos do not do this house justice. It is absolutely huge. The neighborhood is impressive, as all of the other homes are similarly large and historic. The owner is kind and responsive. I have absolutely loved my stay here and I would highly recommend it if you are ever visiting Bangor.
We were in Bangor for the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame ceremony, and couldn’t have picked a better place to stay for a few days. The home was very comfortable and had everything you could need. The host was very responsive! As a fan of Stephen King, I also like the proximity of his Bangor home to the Big Red House. I will plan to stay here again when I return to Bangor!
The house is great, it has everything you need.
The kitchen is well equipped, there a a lot of rooms.
The neighberhood is nice and quiet.
it is loacted just 5 minutes driving from Maine saving theathere, on the way back from the show, while everyone stood in trafic, we walled back to the house !
Cindy was great, answering all our questions before and during the stay .
Four humans and one dog stayed at the BRH while in town for a canoe race! The house was welcoming and perfectly clean. Plenty of towels, blankets and a kitchen stocked with appliances that we cooked in.
Nice neighborhood for dog walks and easy to get to grocery stores!
Check in and out process was seamless and everything was accurately represented!
Would certainly highly recommend!!
What a charming home. It was fun walking through all the rooms and seeing the history of the house. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom towels were super plush. Our host, Cindy, was so great to work with. We stayed in the heat of July and Cindy provided fans for the bedrooms since there is no a/c. We were able to visit Acadia and Bar Harbor while we were there. Great downtown to drive through as well. Thanks for allowing us to stay!
This property met our needs for our recent trip. We had one night that was a little warm due to unseasonable Maine heat, but we were otherwise comfortable as the weather cooled in the evenings. The beds were comfy and the kitchen was indeed the gathering spot. We wished for more ceiling fans but realize this is an historic home. It's charm outweighed our concerns.
Kitchen is equipped well
the house is open and laid out well
It was just the two of us but for a larger group the great room could use more (larger) furniture
Th master bed is a bit soft
