About this property
Forest Retreat with Two Kings and Expansive Deck
A two-bedroom retreat sitting in the trees in Sudden Valley, about 15 minutes from downtown Bellingham. Large private deck with a dining table and lounge chairs looking out at the forest. Two king bedrooms, open-concept living with vaulted wood ceilings, fully equipped kitchen, and a sectional that converts to sleep two more. Whatcom Lake, hiking trails, a public golf course, and a private disc golf course are all minutes away. Pet friendly.
The unit sits on the upper level of a home built into a forested hillside. The trees are not a backdrop here, they are right there, surrounding the deck, filtering the light, keeping the place cool in summer. It is genuinely quiet in a way that takes a few hours to get used to if you have been in a city.
Inside, the main living space has vaulted wood ceilings that give it a proper cabin feel without being remote or rustic. The kitchen is fully equipped with a Keurig. Large sectional in the living room converts to a king-size bed by pushing the two ottomans together, bedding stored inside, good for two children or one adult. Two bedrooms, each with a king bed. Each room has its own thermostat.
The deck is the main draw. Large, private, with a dining table and lounge chairs. Forest on all sides. The kind of place you sit down for morning coffee and look up two hours later.
In-unit washer and dryer. Free parking in the driveway. Pets welcome.
DISC GOLF
Guests have access to Mossy Roc Disc Golf Course, a private advanced 18-hole course. Four discs are provided in the TV console in the living room. Lost discs are a $20 replacement charge per disc.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
Galbraith Mountain is a short drive and one of the most developed trail networks in the Pacific Northwest, with options from beginner flow trails to technical enduro and downhill. I co-host a guided riding experience with a professional UCI Downhill World Circuit racer, tailored to your ability level. Guests get 20% off. Message me before or after booking if you want details.
THE AREA
Sudden Valley is a wooded residential neighborhood about 15 minutes from downtown Bellingham. Quiet, forested, and far enough from the city to feel like you got away, close enough that a dinner reservation in town is easy.
Whatcom Lake is a few minutes away and open to the public: swimming, kayaking, fishing. The Sudden Valley Golf Course is close and open to the public. The Interurban Trail and Chuckanut Mountain are nearby for hiking, with routes from easy waterfront walks to ridgeline trails with views over Puget Sound.
Downtown Bellingham has a serious food and brewery scene for a city its size. Gruff Brewing and Kulshan at Trackside are both worth an evening. Trackside is an outdoor beer garden, wine bar, and food hub next to a large bike park where kids can ride while adults eat and drink in the sun. Otherside Bagels for the morning, L&L for lunch, the Community Food Co-op for groceries and one of the better breakfast burritos in the area. The Saturday Farmers Market at Depot Market Square runs Saturdays April through December.
In winter, Mount Baker Ski Area is about an hour's drive and one of the snowiest resorts in North America. Bellingham is the closest real city to it.
GOOD TO KNOW
The home is built into a hillside: one flight of stairs to the first level, then a short second flight up to this unit. Worth knowing if traveling with young children, elderly guests, or a lot of gear.
Sudden Valley gets very dark after sunset. If arriving at night, bring a flashlight or use your phone's light.
One dedicated parking space in the driveway. A second space is available and shared. Street parking also available.
The entire unit is yours: both bedrooms, kitchen, living area, bathroom, and deck. Private entrance, one level, self-contained. Exterior security cameras are on the property at entrances and exterior areas only.

We loved staying at this property. The house is clean and very bright with lots of windows. The neighborhood is quiet and has many trails for walking. We used this as a central location to access several biking locations nearby.
This was such a lovely house. Cozy, clean, peaceful. I stayed with my daughter while visiting her at college, but could have easily fit my family of 4. Torrey, the owner, is kind and easy to connect with when I had a question. I would definitely stay here again.
We had a lovely stay! The area and neighborhood were very nice. The house was very clean and comfortable! Moved my son from KS to WA so it’s nice to know there’s a peacefully comfortable place to stay when we visit!
Very well furnished, quiet and extremely clean home. Very responsive owner when we had problems with the keyless entry. Grateful they allowed our two mature dogs. Recommended.
We stayed at Torrey's place for a last-minute trip to Bellingham, and were welcomed by a super clean house equipped with everything we could've needed. The beds were supportive and comfy, the living room was generous and relaxed, and the kitchen was well-stocked with cooking supplies. Torrey was responsive and friendly in all of our communications with her, making everything as easy as possible for us. We highly recommend this rental!
Lovely unit on a quiet street in Sudden Valley. Pet owners note that the stairs to the front door are metal grates, which our dog didn't like, so we just picked him up to take him up and down the stairs. Not a problem for us!The unit is clean, spacious, cozy, and well appointed. We had everything we needed. We did have a little trouble getting checked in, but Torrey was extremely responsive and helpful. Thanks for a great stay!
We highly recommend this VRBO; the host was extremely helpful, and everything was better than expected. We checked in late, the lights were on, and the place was welcoming. I have rented several homes, and this was the best one I have ever been to. It was clean, well stocked, and had quality linens and towels. It is tucked away in the trees; we feel peaceful, and the neighborhood is quiet. Even though it was during the winter, we had no problems getting to the location and found it convenient to Bellingham. We highly recommend this unit, and you will be pleased with how nicely it is kept.
We were unable to stay at this place due to plumbing issues. We were informed 1 hour before we arrived. This was very disappointing. The location was pretty but I was under the impression it was an entire house, not an upper unit.
We loved this vrbo! The location, how well stocked the kitchen is, the cleanliness, how close it.was to short hikes and the fact it is pet friendly all contribute to our 5 star rating.
Gorgeous place, great host, not the right place for me
This was a gorgeous place to stay, both the home and the location. Great price for all that it came with. The host was very responsive, and the home had everything I could think to need. Unfortunately, it didn’t work well for me because my dog is terrified of grates, and I didn’t realize the stairs would be grated, so getting into and out of the house was a nightmare. We ended up sliding down the steep hill to avoid the first set of stairs and buying a ramp to help him up the second set of stairs. The beds were also really hard, so I had a hard time sleeping.I don’t think either of these issues should deter anyone else from staying. I know now to ask a lot of questions when I’m bringing my dog with me on trips. But FYI if your dog doesn’t do see-through stairs that this might not work for you.
