"Not worth its 4.8 star rating. We suspect that many guests are not quite honest because the host, Sandrine, is such a nice person. Kind, bilingual, and helpful. We have long hesitated to write an honest review, but we do feel the need to warn upcoming guests about what to expect. When everything was new, a few decades ago, the converted barn must have been truly amazing. Now, sadly, the place is not kept up. What was good: the bed linens and towels were fresh and clean. "My friend & I arrived for a weeklong stay, and we stayed 12 hours. We did not feel safe because the property was so isolated and had no easy way to secure it when we would leave. My friend found evidence of bedbugs in the largest bed. The kitchen faucet would only run while spraying, and the oven was not clean. Adjacent buildings were cluttered and not clean. We voiced most of our concerns to the owner, and he promised a full refund, but none has been forthcoming."

"The very kind hostess gave us great advice during our weeklong stay. The gite is fantastic - comfortable beds, ample bathrooms, and nicely equipped kitchen. Avernes is a lovely town, close to many other small villages and beautiful countryside, but also easy drive to Monet’s house and gardens and larger towns. The restaurant in town offers delicious food, and the butcher is well provisioned…both an easy walk from the gite. Highly recommended, Thanks Sandrine!"
