It is very convenient as a base, being on the road between Penrith and Pooley Bridge with a direct bus route between the two, going as far as Windermere, and for drivers it is a good place to access most parts of the Lake District, being not far from the M6 and A66, making access to Carlisle and the Scottish borders equally easy. "Great staff and a very warm, friendly and efficient check-in. A great touch, much appreciated, was a table was booked for me incase I wanted to dine in. My room was in a small annex to the Blacksmith Arms. It is generously termed by estate agents as cosy. The bathroom was far larger and included a bath and separate shower. All was clean with a generous application of bleach. The room was very quiet except for the occasional screech of either pheasant or peacock. I couldn't make my mind up which....

"The Bowes Hotel is a lovely hotel and pub in a small village near Hadrian's Wall. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The room was clean, fresh, and renovated within last 5 years. My friend stated if she could pack the bathroom in her suitcase and take it home she would! And, we had a lovely view of their garden. Would definitely stay there again. "

"What a lovely old school pub and hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was great (a lot of locals seemed to be eating here too). Room was simple but comfortable and very clean. There are a few areas that are a little tired and worn, but not to the level of impacting guests. I would be happy to stay here again"

"Very friendly staff in popular and welcoming village local. We only stayed one night and didn't eat here though the menu looked great. Obviously popular with locals and tourists alike for a small village it was busy on the Saturday night we stayed. Room was clean and comfortable though dated. The bed was a bit older than some but perfectly pleasant. The surrounding area is stunning with plenty to do within a short drive and lots of walking on your doorstep. Overall a most enjoyable stay. "Horrendous journey to the Fox and Pheasant. Worried we would miss the dinner cut off time we called through. Been traveling for over 10 hours! No problem arrive very tied to a lovely bowl of soup. Feel in to bed and had an amazing sleep. Set off next morning after a fantastic breakfast and a lovely packed lunch. Defo stop off again"

"I was taken to the room, which was somewhat cramped with ever-so-slightly grubby duvets and extremely thin pillows. All acceptable problems I was prepared to deal with (as was the remote for the oddly-placed tele being dead, but that's me being picky) and I was even able to accept the fact that the shower had two settings - literally scalding (the red of my hand taking hours to go down) or too cold to use. The real problem came when I was told I could use my key on the rear door at any time, to...
