Stylish pet friendly Cotswold holiday cottage - Smuggsbarn Cottage

With much of Chedworth being deemed a conservation area, many of the houses are traditional Cotswold stone cottage style homes, allowing the village to retain its charm. This chocolate box style village is located on the steep side of a valley along the tributary of the River Coln. This wonderful location makes Chedworth ideal for those wanting to explore the countryside with multiple footpaths in and around the area including the Macmillan Way and the Monarch's Way. One of our favourites is a snippet of the Macmillan Way to the nearby Chedworth Roman Villa, managed by the National Trust, then heading on through Chedworth woods before returning back to the village.

For your shopping essentials, there is a Waitrose in Cirencester. Most larger supermarkets do offer delivery to this area.

Chedworth sits in South Cotswolds, just eight miles from Cirencester and 11 miles from Cheltenham. The much-loved towns of Stroud, Northleach and Withington are also within easy reach. As are the popular attractions of Cerney House, Sherbourne Park Estate and the village of Bibury.

Lovely stay in gorgeous cottage

We had a lovely week at Smuggsbarn. The cottage was clean and well equipped with even a dog wash area. The beds were extremely comfortable. I used to live in Chedworth and it was great to be able to show my Ukrainian guest all that the Cotswolds has to offer. We wished we could stay longer and will definitely look to return.

Nice cottage for a short break

The cottage itself was lovely and served us well for the time we were there. The key box wasn’t immediately located but we found it eventually attached to the rear gates. The cottage was for the main part clean but we felt it hadn’t been hoovered/cleaned as well as it could have been as floors weren’t great.

Lovely gem

Lovely both modern and traditional cottage in a very quiet village. Easy to access lots of areas in the Cotswolds. Dog friendly with a purpose built dog wash area in the boot room which was a god send. Stair gates on the stairs and dogs aren’t allowed on furniture or upstairs- which some people with dogs may struggle with so just a pre warning. Fully enclosed garden so pet safe. Has everything you need for a more than comfortable stay.

Nice home for your Cotswolds visit

I am originally from Chedworth, so it’s worth noting that I knew where I would be staying. We loved the house for our week long stay. It worked really well for a family of four, the WiFi was excellent, two guest rooms helped for the kids and they also had the garden to play in. It’s also very close to the village hall and their playing fields. We will stay here again on our next trip…

Lovely stay in great location for visiting the Cotswolds

Cottage in handy location for visiting lots of places and doing dog walks. Few minor points they could address - no coffee pods on arrival as promised, middle blind in main bedroom didn't close so very bright first thing in the morning, beds in room 2 not put together as requested, dog poop in garden left from previous visitors, dustbin lorry arrived on Thursday morning (notes said Tuesday).

Short summer break

We stayed at Smuggs Barn Cottage for a week and had a fantastic time. Very peaceful location, while still within 15/20 min drive to local town. Did not get a chance to try the local pubs but visited local villages / towns. Very beautiful part of England.

Family Stay

We stayed for one week in Smuggdbarn Cottage with our kids and our dog. The Cottage is very well prepared for traveling with a dog, especially with an own dog shower and gates at the stairs that prevents the dog from going in the upper floors. The living rooms are really nice with all you need for quite evenings or games for the kids. We really loved to stay at the cottage and we. An fully recommend Smuggsbarn Cottage.

A few things need dealing with

Very clean, for me it lacked coziness. There was an issue in upstairs bathroom that could be an accident waiting to happen. There was also a sewage smell in boot room that seaped through. We had to block of the plug holes to cut down on odour.

Autumn stay in the Cotswolds

Smuggs Barn Cottage was a good flexible option for us to stay with our adult daughters and dogs. It was great to have an additional potential space downstairs with a bed settee, although some might find it disconcerting that there is no specific door to the upstairs bedroom accessible directly from the sitting room. The kitchen is spacious and a great base. We found it very helpful to have stair gates at the foot of each of the staircases. We were surprised to find that there weren't any baking sheets provided - just a few (nice but not particularly large) ovenproof dishes. For chips a baking sheet is much easier to use! The most irritating thing about the house was that the downstairs toilet only fully flushed itermittently - we did get used to it, but it was a bit annoying. The garden is large and there are some good walks direct from the door. We decided to take a trip out to Bourton on the Water on the Saturday which was a huge mistake - it was absolutely jam packed with people, so we didn't stop! Aside from rush hour trains I don't think I've seen so many people milling around. Chedworth is a good location for touring around the area.

Lovely Cotswold cottage stay

Smuggsbarn cottage is in a beautiful village and very well placed for visiting all the area has to offer. We were a family of 5 adults, a 15 mth old baby and a dog and there was plenty of room for all of us. The cottage is a good size; comfortable and cosy. The kitchen was very well equipped and there were some nice touches in the cottage such as the boot room with a dog shower. We loved having the Wii for some family fun in the evenings. We liked the quirky staircase from living room to bedroom 1 although not necessarily suitable for anyone with mobility issues. The garden was lovely and it was a shame we couldn’t enjoy it due to rain most of our stay but then we did visit in late September. Booking was easy and communication ahead of our visit was efficient and informative. We had a slight issue with leaking in the boot room on arrival but this was due to torrential rain and it is an old building. We reported it to the managing agents who were quick to respond. It didn’t occur again during our stay. There are some lovely walks from the cottage and some nice places to eat within a short drive. It’s a shame the local pub had shut down as it would have been nice to be able to walk somewhere to eat but we understand there are plans for this to be reopened in the future. We very much enjoyed our stay at Smuggsbarn and would happily return.

Read the small print before you book

If you book this cottage beware of the small print. A £250 deposit was put on my credit card on hold then on the day of departure the whole £250 was taken from my card due to 2 minor mud prints out of the duvet cover (which they apparently they couldn’t get out even with bleach and a 90 degree wash!) I was charged £46.89 for replacements. I was not sent the receipt. The remainder of the deposit didn’t go back on my card for over 7 days. The cottage is meant to be dog friendly but dogs are not allowed upstairs but when you arrive the stair gates are open therefore the dogs run upstairs! Make sure you take towels for the dogs. The entrance lock is defective and needs changing it took us 15 mins to get the key to work in the dark. Other guests have mentioned this . Checkin time is 17h00 and departure time is 10h00. The parking is at the side of the road not ideal for big cars or animals or small children.
