"We stayed at Asaya for 3 nights and it was one of the more memorable experiences during our 2 week Japan sojourn. All the staff from the front desk crew to other supporting staff were very friendly and it was obvious that they strived to make our stay enjoyable. The buffet dinner and breakfast were excellent with a great variety of Japanese and Western items. All were freshly prepared with local ingredients. The decor of the property has a very distinct 1980's vibe but the management manages to keep the hotel in good shape and the facility is very well maintained. All in all, highly recommended if you are in Nikko area."

"Feels very upmarket from the entrance all the way to the room. The Japanese room I stayed in felt extremely large; like a 5-star hotel in Tokyo. The washbasin area looks modern and is well equipped with amenities, including a face steamer. Separate toilet is large. Bathtub is deep for a good soak with a nice view of the outside. Parking is limited in front so you need to drive further in or up the slope. May be inconvenient if you are alone with heavy luggage and arriving late. Some of the fixtures also need attention as the mixer switch at the bathtub (room 305) was broken with sharp edges; this can be a risk for children, those with poor eyesight or using it in low light. I did not use the hot springs as I spend most of the time exploring the area by car. Highly recommended for couples, lone travellers and small families."

"Quiet cultural experience. We were the only foreigners we could see. Beautiful property, view and area. Not a lot of places to visit but enough for 1-2 days. FYI This property is not at the Nikko city but the Nikko area. Large buffet and free drinks. Beds on the floor and daughter was really on the floor but all part of experience. If you want a quiet experience away from the city then this is great- even better with small children as has a pool park next door. "

The most luxurious sleep of our whole trip, the room we stayed in was absolutely gorgeous and felt like a small apartment compared to some of the hotels we stayed at while in Japan. I highly recommend staying here to anyone looking to visit Nikko!"

"This is a grand dame of a ryokan hotel next to a beautiful river with a scenic view of a suspension bridge and cliff. The hotel is very worn and in real need of a renovation, but the staff keep it as clean as they can. This is not a glamorous hotel and is definitely past its prime. However, that's not why you come here. You come to this ryokan for the hospitality, the well-maintained spa, the family activities, which are numerous (outdoor pool, manga reading room, mahjong, billiards, table tennis and karaoke) and its convenient location to the train station and the river. The buffet breakfast and dinner are delicious, the staff is very friendly and hard-working and there is an endless supply of choose-your-own yukata by the front desk. This is a quiet town and the sidewalk rolls up early as well as the activities in the hotel, which makes it a good, wholesome place for a family with young children or teens."
