"We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Hotel Kagetsu in Matsumoto. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome with their warm, friendly, and attentive service.
The room exceeded our expectations. It was spotless, incredibly spacious, and thoughtfully designed with a unique split-level layout that made it feel even larger. Having two sinks was a great convenience, and the amenities provided were excellent. Everything was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, making it easy to relax after a day of exploring.
The location is fantastic—you really can't go wrong staying here. It's convenient to Matsumoto Castle, restaurants, shops, and everything you need while still offering a peaceful atmosphere.
What truly made our stay exceptional was the outstanding customer service. The staff went above and beyond to help us arrange luggage forwarding to our next hotel, even though we requested it on very short notice. Despite the language barrier, they were incredibly patient, resourceful, and determined to make everything work. Their kindness and willingness to help made a lasting impression on us, and we were so grateful for all of their efforts.
We would highly recommend Hotel Kagetsu to anyone visiting Matsumoto. It offers beautiful accommodations, an excellent location, less than 10 minute walk to Matsumoto Castle, and some of the best hospitality we've experienced in Japan. We would gladly stay here again!"
"It’s a 15 minute walk from the station and there is not much nearby but perfect for visiting the castle. Staff are friendly and the hotel offers a free meal of meat and rice each evening from 6.30pm. There is an onsite bathhouse. Room was a bit small but standard for Japan."
"The Dormy Inn is a convenient and clean hotel. Check-in and checkout were quick and easy. They offered a welcome drink of Nagano Apple Juice and they provide a complementary ramen for those working late. The top floor baths were well maintained and clean. The bath provided many amenities including razors and a yogurt drink. The rooms are on the small size and I came with a family so I booked 2 rooms. It was nice that the staff placed the rooms next door to each other. The breakfast was comprehensive and there was plenty of room for us. The only issue I had, and it bothered everyone in my party, were the pillows. The pillows are so hard that my wife got a headache and I’m still feeling a pain in my neck 3 days later."
"From the moment we entered we felt honored and welcomed. The rooms were spacious (if you’ve traveled in Japan you know the rooms are usually small - I’m 6’2” and I felt comfortable and I could even do stretches on the rattan floor.) Great views from windows that open. We opted for breakfast and dinner included. Deeeellicious! -oishii desu! No 2 multi-course meals were the same, other than they were unique and filling! We did not have to get any other meals while in Matsumoto. There are 3 well- equipped onsen with multiple pools of varying temperatures. One onsen was men-only, the second women-only and the third was mixed gender, so my girlfriend and I could relax together. It’s a short walk and quick bus ride to city center. We went for a hike/walk up the hill and saw a firefly-breeding project with a few fireflies! Water available in the lobby. On Sunday night, we were greeted with a youth group randomly playing drums at the local park next door. It was entertaining local culture. Any requests, like ice, was accommodated immediately. We are older, seasoned travelers and this was one of the best expenses we've ever had. HIGHLY RECOMMEND."
"the staff was so sweet and helped us out with all of our needs, even though i was on vacation his kindness made it felt like we were back home. The rooms were small however it was only meant for sleeping and the futons were SO comfortable"
