Tarapoto sits on the edge of the vast jungles of eastern Peru. It's the closest place you can fly to after your forays into the rainforests of the Amazon near Iquitos, in order to reconnect with Peru's road network.

There's a wonderfully laid-back vibe here, plenty of street art, local markets, as well as restaurants serving delicious regional specialities, and bars serving drinks made from soaking jungle roots in cane liquor.

If you come here, stay at El Mirador. There's a terrace with amazing jungle views and the breakfast they serve is probably one of the best I've eaten in Peru.

"If you want a quiet and relaxing time, don’t go to this hotel. We stayed there from Saturday to Sunday. An awfully load music started at 9 pm and finished at 4 am. It was so noisy you can hear it like it’s next door, even through the headphones. Impossible to have a good sleep. The hotel doesn’t have WIFI, the rooms don’t have complimentary water and a hairdryer, which you may need after the water activities. "While the property is nice it has seen better days. The gardens were nice. The pool is lovely and the rooms are clean. The amenities were old like the warped pool tables. There wasn’t much interior seating in the social areas to sit at on rainy days except for the restaurant. The few staff that worked there were friendly and they work hard. Dinning is very limited - it’s the same menu at the outdoor bar as the dining room. Consider that this property is outside the main district so you do have to call for moto taxi or car if you’re bored and want to get some entertainment. "

"We stayed at La Patarashca Hotel for two nights. The staff are very helpful and accommodating. The grounds are lush and gorgeous, you’ll feel like your in the jungle! The rooms were basic and the mattress wasn’t the most comfortable. Despite that I would book here again. It’s blocks from the Plaza de Armas. The breakfast buffet was generous and I would highly recommend the attached restaurant for dinner. "
