Friars Carse Country House Hotel

"We recently spent a night in a deluxe room to break up our return journey home from the Hebrides. We love older, quirky hotels and this one is a real gem. Firstly the grounds are stunning and our early morning walk beside the river was a wonderful way to start the day. The hotel itself has lots of character, but don't come here expecting polished perfection. Some areas of the hotel look a little tired and could do with refurbishing, but all the bits that mattered were fabulous and everywhere was clean. Our deluxe room was large, comfortable, clean and had everything we needed for our stay. The dining at the hotel was far better than we'd expected with a wonderful menu and some excellent seafood dishes and decent wine. Service was swift, friendly and unpretentious. Partway through our stay we found out more about the history of the building and it was eye-opening to say the least. I had an extremely strange lucid dream combined with sleep paralysis...or at least that's what I think could explain the laughter of a little girl right beside my bed at 3am and me trying to wake my husband but being unable to move...! Anyway, regardless, we had a fabulous stay, it was good value for money and we'd not hesitate to stay there again."

"Fabulous hotel with good rooms. The breakfast is fabulous - amazing choice of breakfast items. We had two evening meals at the hotel and these were great and good value. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Large car park round the back of the hotel which even boasts some of the wall from the fort on Hadrian's wall. Also there is a section of the wall in the hotel reception. We will definitely stay here again when we next visit Carlisle."

"Staff was excellent. Breakfast was good. The rooms are dated. We had the room with 3 single beds in it. Two were comfortable and one was too soft. No sheets to cover with only a comforter. No AC!!! Only a small fan.The room was kind of stuffy."

"Amazing staff, great location and parking The food is average and the menu is very limited, the room (19) has been updated recently but was right by the the main road and a noisy extract fan on the floor below which came on at 4.15am every morning. Overall it’s a nice big hotel that has been in the process of renovation for the last few years. It would be a much better experience if they could expand the menu and quality of the food."
