Lakeside Adventurer's Cabin
This well appointed, low key cabin is the storybook mountain cabin. Nestled in an aspen grove and sitting slightly above Lake Purgatory it boasts a short walk to the private lake making it easy to go canoeing or paddle boarding. At the end of a short dirt road with one other cabin on the road, this home feels like a secluded paradise!
Winter months provide a backcountry sort of experience without having to go deep into the woods. While the cabin is just over a mile from HWY 550, during a snow storm guests will likely have to park approximately 50 yards from the cabin and walk, ski, or snowshoe in. Even though the road is maintained, the hill at the top of the driveway becomes unsurpassable in big snowstorms. This is exciting for the adventurers at heart! If this is for you, make sure you grab a bundle of wood on your way in and warm up next to the fire!
During summer months the driveway greets you with wild chamomile and mint, the lake sparkles beyond the aspen's leaves and the Needles Cliffs hang proudly around the backdrop. Find quiet solitude, and gather with your closest friends and family here.
Surrounded by aspens, this is a gorgeous resting spot for leaf peeping adventures. Soak in the view from the picture windows, bird watch from bed, and gaze at the incredible night sky.
Offering two cozy rooms with baseboard heat, picture windows, and comfortable beds, plus a sleeping loft/media room with futon sofas, this cabin is the perfect setting for an intimate group to call home base while they explore Durango's big back yard!
No matter what the season is, our guests find good friends and family around the fire pit on the patio, and enjoy gourmet meals in the fully stocked and updated kitchen.
Two mudrooms offer space for all the mountain gear you may need. Equipped with modern washer and dryer, guests can pack light and make themselves at home.
The log walls have been chinked and restored offering a rustic feel in the newly remodeled bathroom and bedroom. Owned by an artist, no detail has been forgotten with the aesthetic in this small yet open floor plan.
We invite you to bring your adventurous side, your inner mountain pioneer, and come relax!

We absolutely loved this place and wish we could have stayed longer but it was booked. Has everything you need to get away and surrounded by the beauty of Southwest Colorado!
We had a great visit! Loved the cabin and especially loved the patio! The cabin had everything we needed and then some. It was a great place to celebrate our 39th anniversary and we will be returning!
The cabin was clean and more spacious than anticipated. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place that is still close enough to civilization if you want it! Everything was very comfortable!
Nice property in a quiet neighborhood. Updated kitchen and bath , but still has that cozy rustic charm. It was right up our alley, wish it was my place!
Cabin had all the comforts and more. Wonderfully clean. Well supplied, down to the details. Worth the hassle with some outdated codes and passwords. Katie was always very responsive and easy to communicate with.
Great location to explore the million dollar highway. Property was well equipped with everything we needed. Katie was super responsive and we enjoyed our short stay. We didn't make it onto the lake, but we walked the property and saw beaver and a snowshoe hare. Loved the wildlife.
What a great adventure we had at this property. I can honestly say I’m not sure I’ve ever had a more accommodating host. The property and home were amazing. Would definitely recommend to anyone just make sure you have a 4 wheel drive in the winter and you’ll have a wonderful time!
Nice Stay. Enjoyed driving the last 100 yards up the narrow wooded road to the cabin, chopping firewood, getting warm by the wood stove, walking in the snow. Interior decorating was amazing - it was a cabin for cabin connoisseurs. Only issues - no clear house numbers or identification. I happen to know that area and that small road and had GPS signal, and I still drove by it. Please put up clear direction at the top of the driveway - assume it is dark and snowing when one is trying to find it :)
We loved our weekend of fall colors at the Adventure Cabin. The cabin itself was nicer than expected. We especially loved the new cement patio off the downstairs living area, the design of the bathroom and it's beautiful walk in shower, the large dining room table in the bigger than anticipated kitchen and the amazing views from the loft, bedroom and living area. (all not pictured but worthy of being featured). NOTE: outside fires are no longer permitted so the fire pit was not a part of our experience. We pivoted by moving the living room furniture to face the windows, made old fashioneds instead of s'mores and enjoyed the warmth of the indoor wood burning stove to comfortably experience the beautiful scenery that surrounds the cabin. The the abundance of stars at night was the cherry on top. It was all very magical!!
We also enjoyed the proximity to our favorite watering hole The Nugget!
The property is in a lovely location with a view of
aspen and evergreen trees overlooking a small lake. It is at close to 8850 feet elevation (according to compass on my watch). I did fine, but my husband had a few symptoms of altitude sickness (nothing emergent), even though we have lived just above 5000 feet for over 6 years. We LOVE the San Juan Mountains area. This property provides great access to Purgatory Resort, Silverton, and the Durango area. We did not choose the best weather days for our vacation. It rained all but the first morning we were there. We did get to drive Hwy 550 over to Ouray before the clouds moved in, which is spectacular! We are fidgety people, so it was tough for us not to be able to hike or ride our bikes. I read several books and went to downtown Durango a few times for my entertainment. If you have never been to this area, seeing the beauty in nature there is a must for your bucket list!
This was a perfect place for my family and I. Katie was amazing! She took care of us very well and responded very well to our needs. I would highly recommend anybody staying at this location
The cabin was as described and shown in the pictures. A wonderful host with great communication. The location was beautiful just a couple minute down to the lake. The cabin was not far from some wonderful mountain hikes. We highly recommend this cabin. You’ll love it.
Beyond what we could have even hoped for! We felt instantly at home in this beautiful cabin...feels like a big hug. After a day of adventuring, to sit in those chairs and here the quaking aspens rustling in the breeze was Heavenly. Wish we lived there :) If you go, make sure to do the Soaring all day Zipline tour through the San Juan Mountains and over Animas river. Spectacular!
Really nice cabin!! Very secluded! Just make sure you have 4 wheel drive and/or check the weather forecast before you go! We weren't expecting snow in October, and it was kind of scary getting to the cabin with icy roads...but we made it and it was a perfect time
Our experience was uniformly outstanding. The property is perfectly situated as a base camp for mountain adventures. The views of the Lake and Mountainscapes were beautiful. Our favorite activity at the end of each day was to relax in the red chairs on the deck. The kitchen was fully equipped. The loft made for a great location for movie viewing and popcorn. The wood stove heats up the cabin brilliantly and sitting around it makes for a comfortable stage for reading or perusing maps. I strongly recommend this cabin and would stay here again without question.
