Gottweig Abbey was established in the 11th century. It has had monks onsite for over 900 years, longer than any other Abbey or monastery in Europe. Most of the structures burnt to the ground in the 18th century, so a majority of the buildings are a mere 300 years old. The Abbey library contains an outstanding collection of both print volumes and drawings, many of which have now been digitized through a partnership with Danube University-Krems. While the heavy fog that often rolls off the Danube makes the scene look pretty gothic, the cathedral is actually baroque.

"We arrived about 7:30 PM (19:30) after a lengthy drive and busy day near Salzburg. The Gaestehaus appears to be on a narrow alley in the middle of the town. We could barely squeeze our small car into the alley, and there appeared to be no place to park. We rang the doorbell and knocked several times, but there was no answer, and the place seemed dead, except for a neighbor lady from across the street, that seemed surprised to see us. Nice hotel

"The hotel is very well located for accessing the city center. There is a beautiful park nearby. Motorcycle parking is available in the hotel garden, which is closed overnight. The staff were very friendly and offered a full breakfast with eggs upon request."

"Great place to stay, extremelly clean, well arranged, friendly staff and ready to help. Very good restaurant, not too many options but they are changing the menu completelly on a daily basis! So for sure you will find someting new each time when you'll attend. The food quality is very good, starting from breakfast to dinner. Room impecably clean, everything very well maintained. The surronding area is very pleasant, on the Danube shore with hills around close to manh beautifully hystoricall small cities. A place to remember! Congratulation hotel team!"
