Taken during a photo stop on the Hertfordshire Railtour "Meldon Quarryman" on 24 November 1984. In falling light conditions at Meldon Quarry, 50047 "Swiftsure" is seen stabled on a train of stone wagons. Class 50s were never that common on freights being built originally for express services north of Preston on the WCML prior to electrification in mid-1970s. After that, they had a career move to be re-allocated to the Western Region and again worked express serves to the West Country. They also put in a good service during the 1980s on the London Waterloo to Exeter route.
