Perfect cabin to relax!

My family and I stayed to celebrate Thanksgiving. What a fantastic, clean, remote, relaxing getaway weekend! This cabin is perfect. Camp fires, hot tub, canoeing, and an excellent opportunity to separate from work for a bit.

Lake Front Bliss -June 2016

This is the third time my family and I have had the pleasure of staying at Log Cabin Retreat. My Sister and niece come up from Florida to go on vacation with us. What a lovely home set in such a peaceful relaxing environment. The house is clean and has everything you could need. Our dogs, Roxie and Rosie love the big fenced in yard and swimming.

This is our second stay at the cabin and we have already booked it for next year. The views in the cove are absolutely beautiful. The peace and quiet is just what we all needed. Leslie has thought of everything and you will want for nothing while staying at this cabin. Our Labardoodles loved the big fenced year and going for a daily swim.

Relax with your dogs

This property is a fantastic place to stay if you love your dogs!! The entire place is fenced in! It has a large, beautiful lawn with a perfect view of the lake. The bed was very comfortable. It has so many things to do right at the house. We enjoyed archery, pool table, ping pong, darts, horse shoes, paddle boarding, but much much more is available! The hot tube is wonderful! Fantastic place to relax!!

2nd visit just as excellent as the first!

We love this place and hope to make it an annual trip. We used to go to the Outer Banks but find this to be more relaxing and just as convenient from Richmond. It is perfect for our K9 heavy family. New fire pit was perfect for a S'mores night. The Kitchen is great for anyone looking to cook a gourmet meal for the family. Well stocked with everything you should need. We have yet to try the Hot tub. Maybe next time. Thanks again for having us and the 'Kids'

Perfect weekend getaway

We booked this property as a birthday surprise for my father. He loved the location - It was so quiet and serene while we were there. Neighbors are close, but well hidden in the trees. Only time we realized anyone was out there was when we heard an infrequent car pass by. The house had everything we needed and more... Hot tub with a view, decks and outdoor space, dock, and outdoor gear. We traveled in February, but this would be an amazing spring/summer/fall spot. Kitchen was well stocked with tools and spices - We brought a lot with us, but could have done without since it was already there. Bedrooms were cozy and well insulated from sound - We all slept great. Location is close to several wineries and brewery - We were able to get out and explore for a portion of our stay. We cannot wait to come back to Smith Mountain Lake!

Charming lakefront cabin filled with all amenities

My husband and I spent 3 days at this beautiful cabin. We easily could have spent a week or more. Located right on the lake, this cabin is so very cozy. Three separate fireplaces (with a real woodburning one!) make this a great place to cuddle on a cold day. The house was equipped with literally everything you can think of in the kitchen. This makes it very easy to cook, which is important in the winter as only a handful of restaurants are open. The downstairs is great for older children or teenagers....dart board, pool table, sitting area with TV/DVD. We really enjoyed using the hot tub as well. This place would be amazing in other seasons as well. There are multiple decks/outside sitting areas, canoes, and a fire pit. My husband and I absolutely plan on coming back and making this an annual trip.

An Amazing Peaceful Retreat!

This was our third year in the cove and our second year at the Log Cabin Retreat. We absolutely adore it here! It is so peaceful! We love being amongst the woods, mountains, wildlife and of course the beautiful lake! We love our boating trips and simply relaxing by the water on the docks. My husband fishes day and night and our beagles Jax and Bella always enjoy their stay! This year Bella injured her hind leg a week prior to our vacation and was on resting orders from our Vet so they did not get to run and play on the hill which they so enjoyed last year. Hopefully next visit the pups will have no restrictions! We look forward to another amazing trip next year! Thanks so much for sharing your amazing home with us and our pups! Loved Log Cabin Retreat

This was our first SML experience and our family of four was spoiled! Wooded, secluded location but with friends renting right next door. We loved swimming in the cove for hours, exploring by canoe, daring each other to jump off the high dock (and jumping!), drinking the surprisingly good local wine left for us, cooking in the well-stocked kitchen (no need for the sharp knife brought from home), and of course having our most favorite dog along to enjoy it with us. A couple of friends came and went so all beds and pillows were used and confirmed comfy. It was a nice touch to include hair dryers in both bathrooms and to provide the dish and laundry soaps, also some of the basic kitchen condiments. We didn't go out much but did rent from Mitchell's Marina which was a short drive and indulged in the fried chicken carry-out from the White House Corner deli. The wifi was sadly used a bit too much for work but it did mean we could stay for two weeks. Owner was easy to work with. We highly recommend this house and hope to be back.

My Dream Vacation!

My Dream Vacation! We so love your log cabin/red house and all of the thoughtfulness of the endearing decor. It is the most peaceful place I have ever been and I just love being in the middle of a wildlife refuge surrounded by the woods, mountains and lake....my little piece of Heaven! Our Beagle pups, Jax and Bella, became Boat Beagles on this trip! This is amazing because they get car sick but oh how they love the pontoon boat we rented from Pete! Another new adventure for them was playing on your grassy hill! We have a very flat lot and they absolutely LOVE to run and slide down your hill! We loved the docks, fishing and canoeing...Especially my husband! We loved boating all day and made our way through most of the big water on SML. I have family and friends in Lynchburg and Evington so it was great that they were so close and able to come down for a day and enjoy some vacation time with us as well! None of us wanted to go home! And we long for next year when we get to visit again! Thanks so much for opening up your beautiful, little piece of Heaven to us :)

Vacation with the in-laws.

Four adults and one happy dog were seriously impressed with the atmosphere and amenities of this home. How wonderful it is to have tones of space for the food. Large shelving area and big refrigerator. The stove and cook top allowed for some terrific meals to be made. Ample pots, pans, plates, silverwear, glasses and utensils too. Bedrooms have lots of storage and the beds felt very comfortable. The enclosed porch with BBQ provided an outdoor entertaining space while it was raining. We loved the opportunity to use the canoes on the river. Peaceful and very scenic. Our dog's first paddle experience was a success, though jumping off the deck to get a stick was more fun for her. From this location we visited a winery, an Alpaca farm, went to the movies and had ice cream at the National Park. Morning walks up the main road through the forest were a daily routine. Our dog loved bounding after squirrels and bunnies. Though tick checks were a must as a few did want to hold on. A pool game, hot tub night and viewing of some basketball games completed the activities. Though it was raining and thundering often, we found ourselves still having plenty of enjoyment. And some great memories were made too. Lots of stunning pictures for our photo book. Thank you!

The Red House

The Red House is a great vacation for families who love to vacation with their dogs! The yard is quite large and completely fenced. It was a joy to watch them run and play with such abandon. The house is great - kitchen is FULLY furnished. No need to bring your favorite coffee maker, knife, or pan in this place. Bedrooms spacious, beds comfortable. Pool table was great fun for the older kids and grown-ups. Plenty of games and puzzles for rainy days. The decks attached to this house are great. The upper deck is great for coffee in the morning as the sun comes up. The lower deck holds the jacuzzi. Need I say more? The deck on the bluff is the perfect place for evening cocktails. The party deck over the dock is great for sunning, socializing, reading, and jumping into the deep cove! The decks are all in very good shape. Floating docs (2) perfect for tying up your boat, kayak, canoe, Seadoo, etc. The deep cove is wide enough to enjoy and in a "No wake" zone which makes paddle boarding, kayaking, and swimming easier. The house is located in a Reserve so there are plenty of opportunities to see deer and other wildlife. Even though our stay was during the summer, I can imagine how cozy this house is during the winter. The stone fireplaces are beautiful. The Red House is warm and inviting, decorated like a log cabin - they even have a stuffed bear! The amenities are wonderful. Only caution is you might not want to leave! Suggestion - owners need a new guest book - all the pages are full!

Wonderful late October stay

My dog, Winnie, and I had a wonderful time staying at the Log Cabin Retreat in late October 2019. The house was plenty big for the two of us (plus a friend who visited for the day over the weekend), but well worth the price tag for the view and fenced in property. My city dog barely knew what to do with all the space! We had a perfect mix of sunny and rainy days and were able to spend most of our days out on the various decks taking in the view of the fall leaves changing across the lake. We had a bad storm one night that knocked down a section of the fence. Winnie was very grateful for the responsive and kind maintenance staff who came out quickly and re-posted the fence so that she could run around on her birthday! The house is well-stocked with all the cookware/utensils you could ever need. One word of caution to future guests--the smoke alarms in the hallway off the kitchen and two bedrooms are very sensitive (one went off when I was boiling water!), so you'll want to have someone tall on standby to shut them off if they're triggered. Too sensitive is better than not sensitive at all, so this was nothing more than a minor inconvenience and encouraged me to cook most of my meals outside on the wonderfully maintained grill, which also has a gas burner on the side for anything you may not want to grill. I was exceptionally impressed with the upkeep of the yard, especially because it is a dog-friendly property. Future guests, please do your part to keep the home and yard clean so that we can all continue to bring our dogs here in the future! Winnie and I are very much looking forward to returning next year!

Beautiful Piece of Property

We arrived at the property on the day of Hurricane Matthew before check in time. The staff was still there cleaning but they were nice enough let us sit in the basement while they finished. At this point in time, no one made us aware that arriving early would cancel some of the perks that the cabin provided, such as a working fire place. This had to be cancelled due to our early arrival. We would have easily gone to a restaurant to wait had we'd known. The cabin and scenery were beautiful. Everything was well maintained and clean. We had a wonderful time using the outside fire pit, the numerous porches and enjoyment of the cabin retreat feel. Our only complaint, being new to the area and never having used the cabin before, was working with the cabin owner. The information we were sent and the book inside the house had many discrepancies along with fees we were unsure of, for example - the use of the hot tub - which we didn't use due to those fees and not wanting to make anymore phone calls. Simple questions such as, are the twin beds long or regular, were returned with answers that made us feel like we were complaining. We also called out of respect to the owner and property about what appeared to be a slight leak in the pipes below the sink. Our call was not "welcomed" as it states they are in the book. Our final call, again out of respect and not wanting to do anything that would damage the property, was about the use of the fire places in the home. Being unaware at the time that this had been cancelled due to our early arrival - again - our call was not welcomed but more of an annoyance. We made no more phone calls. Thank you to HomeAway for providing such a nice cabin but it is very doubtful we will stay here again due to the owner (our reasoning for the 3 stars). However, we'd still recommend this cabin to others in hopes customer service would be more welcome to the next guests. We wish the owner and her family well wishes and prayers during what may have been a difficult time.

Perfect Cabin Getaway

We were looking for a quiet place to get away with friends and our dog despite the pandemic and this was the perfect spot...pretty fall color, fenced yard, games, lake equipment, grill, fireplaces....It was so quiet we could hear the leaves falling. We enjoyed the cabin and property so much that we didn't leave the entire week.

Wonderful getaway

This property exceeded my expectations. We selected this property based on it’s location, it’s amenities and the fenced yard. It is a wonderful house inside and out. Thank you to the owner for providing dog lovers with a safe place to take their pups. Thank you for the baby gates which we used at the top of the deck steps. We walked at the state park several days and rented a boat another day. We would definitely return for another getaway.

Great home, with plentiful amenities and wonderful location

Overall we had an amazing stay at this home. It is located in a very quiet development where you can go for walks, runs, or bike ride without worrying about traffic. Note, however, that you will get a workout as the development is hilly. The home itself is a charming cottage with very good amenities and all the toys one needs to play in the lake. Beds were very comfortable, furniture cozy and everything worked as it should. Couple notes for consideration to future renters; the house sits on a slope which makes one feel like they are in a tree house overlooking the lake, however, that also means that it is a challenge to walk up and down the hill from the house to the docks, carrying all the water essentials, food, or other items. Think of it as a great leg workout. The home has plenty of deck space by the house and on the lake, with plentiful seating and various nooks and crannies for relaxation. The fenced in yard is appreciated if one has a dog that can freely run around. The fire pit is perfect for roasting s’mores and enjoying a glass of wine in the evening. The owner is very responsive and ensures that your vacation will be a stress free one. The house is stocked with everything needed to cook and the homeowner even provides starting provisions and other items. Nice touch was the bottle of wine. If you are looking for a home where you can disconnect, be located in a quiet neighborhood, enjoy. a country cottage feel with all the water toys.....this rental is for you.

Beautiful cabin, great location and view. Stayed 10/16-21/2017

We totally enjoyed our stay. The cabin had all the amenities you could need. The weather was perfect. Some of us even got out on the water for a kayak ride. Our dogs loved the large fenced in yard. It made our trip seeing them enjoy running around and playing together. It was so peaceful, we enjoyed sitting out at night and star gazing. Couldn't have asked for a better week away from all the madness. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing home with us. Jean, Jim, Woodrow and Brandy

Fun time.

This home is absolutely beautiful. The location Is beautiful also. The only downside to this home is having to bring your own linens. We have stayed in VRBOs in Maine, Georgia, Bahamas, California, even Lynchburg Virginia and several other states and have never had to bring our own linens. I understand that you can rent the linens but they we expensive and had to be ordered a month in advance. Other than this, there were no other complaints.
