Great location, well-outfitted kitchen, very comfortable with lots of different outdoor spaces. Scott was friendly, relaxed, and prompt with all questions. Just an excellent stay all around. The location, again, cul-de-sac in a quiet beach community. And walk across the road to beach with good snorkeling and sunset views.
We stayed on three islands in our trip and three different rentals. This one was our favorite! Super clean, very spacious and the host was awesome. The beach across the street had amazing snorkeling, but bring water shoes because it’s rocky. We would definitely come back and highly recommend this property! Thanks for a great stay!
We had two families stay here together and it worked well for us. Each bedroom has its own bathroom and shower which was really nice. We loved the huge outdoor seating area and the great location near the best snorkel spots. Host was very available. We would definitely come back!
Loved our stay here! The house is in a perfect location, very peaceful at the end of a dead end road and right across the street from a rocky beach with great snorkeling. It was so nice to not have to drive anywhere if we didn’t want to. And it is within easy walking distance of the resorts, so we were able to walk to have a fancy dinner one night.
The house was large, the bedrooms were nicely spread out to allow for privacy and each bedroom had its own bathroom. There were also multiple lanais to relax on. The house was remarkably clean. Snorkel gear and boogie boards and beach chairs were all provided. Really couldn’t ask for a better place and if we return to this island I would most definitely stay here again.
Fantastic stay as usual- we’ve stayed at this property multiple times because it simply doesn’t get any better on the Big Island— feels like authentic Hawaii away from the resorts, with the locals. Beautiful home that has a great layout for couples or families. Decks on front and back with a bbq grill- we used it every night! The upstairs bedroom is like sleeping in the tree canopy- beautiful views of trees and sounds of the ocean and a fantastic sunrise. Loved having all the beach toys available as well. The outdoor showers were sublime! Thank you to Rick and Scott for sharing your wonderful place- we will be back!
We really liked this house. It was one of the most comfortable places we have ever rented. The house was clean and well maintained. The kitchen had everything we needed with good quality dishes and cookware. The bed we used had a comfortable mattress and pillows. One of the pleasant features of this house was the many windows that allowed good air flow into the house. I always rent a house with air conditioning but we didn’t need it at all with this house. My husband loved the large lanai and spent most of his time outside the house on the lanai. Scott was pleasant when I needed questions answered and otherwise an unintrusive host.
A lovely location and an excellent value. Though it's very near the resorts and some palatial new beach pads, it's old-school Hawaii.
The nearest beaches are very "local," nice for walking, sitting, or fishing. (It's a short drive to white-sand Hapuna, where you now pay big bucks to show up: $10/vehicle + $5/person --> 4 people = $30).
There's persistent ants in the building, including fire ants. My ant Kung Fu is strong, so we had a truce and no one was bitten/stung. But be clean, proactive, and alert, and I don't recommend going around barefoot.
The surprise was the sleeping situation. There *are* 4 bedrooms, but with the funky semi-open layout, no room offers complete cool and quiet. Either the rooms don't have AC, or doors, or windows that you can close to the outside. But it usually cools off at night, and the two cooling units (heat pumps) definitely help.
I want to emphasize that it's not all bad. I'm saying manage your expectations and you'll have a unique and charming experience of Hawaii the way it used to be.
Rented the mango hale for myself and 3 friends. The house was perfect. We each had our own bedroom/bathroom - each room had its own vibe/features. 2 bedrooms were more inside the house, the other two off the lanai. My room had an outdoor shower which was so refreshing. We were so close to ocean access (very rocky - sandals/water shoes were a benefit). Sat out on the lanai every morning drinking coffee. It was seriously one of the best vrbo’s. Thank you!
My husband and I call Mango Hale “our happy place”. This is the 3rd time we have stayed here and will be back next year.
This is a fantastic property. Huge lanai with two large sitting areas, dining table and grill. We love being awakened every morning to the birds as the sunrises, drinking coffee on the lanai. Then going for a quick snorkel across the street or a long hike along the ocean past the resorts. The location couldn’t be better.
The property is very clean and well stocked. The kitchen has all the equipment needed to prepare meals. The provided bath and beach towels are good quality.
There are private balconies with 2 of the bedrooms with nice chairs as well as another off the kitchen with table, chairs and a shoe rack to hold all your sandy flip flops. All the furniture and beds are comfortable.
Lots of beach equipment (chairs, boards, noodles, cooler) available.
Both Scott and Rick are attentive, but not at all intrusive… only seem to be there when you need them…perfect hosts.
Treehouse-like rental across street from fabulous quiet shorefront
My family and I LOVED staying here! It's a little out of the way to get to, but just stock up beforehand. It's basically at the end of a quiet, beautiful street and about 100 feet from access to a quiet, gorgeous shorefront with a long shorefront walking path. Shore is largely rocky and not sandy, but there were numerous turtles and area was fine for beginner snorkellers. Was so helpful to be able to just walk "home" after being there. Shorefront seems used mainly by locals and extends quite a ways. Quiet and private. House was very well appointed, clean, safe, with gorgeous landscaping and lanais everywhere. Geckos frequent the back lanai and were very entertaining. So peaceful to just sit outside and enjoy the beauty. House very well supplied, comfortable, and pleasant. Wish I would have stayed here the whole week and a half instead of booking a condo for the other part of the trip!
We had a wonderful time! Enjoyed the accommodations, especially the treetop bedroom which gave us a 360-degree view of the area, including Mauna Kea and a peekaboo view of the ocean. The lush, tropical vegetation surrounding this home gives this private getaway a true Hawaiian feel. Our host, Scott, was very friendly and helpful when we needed assistance. We’re already talking about returning someday with even more family members.
Absolutely loved Hale Mango. This well appointed house is surrounded by lush vegetation and across the street from beach access. We loved listening to to the birds and feeling the fresh ocean breezes. Scott is a gracious host and works hard to create this lovely environment. We were sad to leave.
The place was in a quiet neighborhood. Rooms were comfortable and we enjoyed our meals on the wonderful lanai. Scott was a good host. We will definitely go back.
A stay at the Mango Hale is such a treat! So relaxing and comfortable, with mountain sunrises and beach sunsets. Scott is so helpful if needed, but never intrudes. Thanks for sharing your slice of paradise with us!
This trip was our second stay at Mango Hale. This house is very well maintained, clean, well appointed and stocked with the basics of paper towels, TP, soaps. The linens are in excellent condition…clean, no stains. The towels provided for both bathing and beach are thick and fluffy. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, utensils, pots/pans…everything you need! Even a blender and coffee grinder. The lanai runs the length of the house and has very comfortable seating, a nice dining area and a Weber propane grill.
We have stayed in many beach properties for over 25 years and this is the best by far. Many times beach houses are filled with odds and ends that people decide to stick at their Beachhouse. This is absolutely NOT the case with Mango Hale. Mango Hale is purposely equipped and appointed with good furniture, good linens, good equipment. It really is like being at home away from home.
The location is fabulous as well. We walked across the street every evening to watch the sunset. You can see turtles every day at one of the public beach accesses on Puako Beach Road.
And Scott is a great host. He is there when we need him but not obtrusive at all. We only know he’s there when we happen to need something or if he’s sharing a mango or dragon fruit with us. We will definitely be back!
We just arrived home from 12 nights in Mango Hale. The more time went by, the more I loved and appreciated this beautiful house. Scott has done an amazing job on this place. You have to be ok with "country" living, a few crawling critters here and there, but I am someone who would much rather be in a natural environment than in a sterile resort. The neighborhood is quiet, there are numerous great swim spots close by, as well as the amazing north side of the Island within easy reach. Beds were comfy, lots of towels, kitchen B+ on stocking, gorgeous lanais. The wind at night was so lovely and there were beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Really a remarkable stay and I encourage people to avail themselves of this fabulous property. Mahalo, Scott. I hope to be back.
loved the non-resort vibe of a real Hawaii beach road - such easy access to good a fun snorkel beach - and close to beautiful sandy public beaches too.
Scott is a great - host - and the beach stuff and well equipped kitchen were awesome.
beds were comfy and the towels great. Higly recommend
