Further afield, visit the spectacular Aira Force (10 miles) in a beautiful woodland setting by Ullswater where you can also spot red squirrels and birdlife. For a thrilling descent, head to Whinlatter Forest (9 miles) which has fantastic mountain bike trails, Segways and tree-top climbing adventures, with a backdrop of mountain and lake vistas.

Step inside this handsome holiday home and store coats and boots in the convenient enclosed hall porch. After a hike on the fells, head into the living room and warm hands by the toasty wood burner set into a sandstone fireplace. Settle into cosy seating and enjoy favourite programmes on the TV with Freesat and a DVD player. Cook up a storm in the well-equipped kitchen which has an eye-level electric double oven, electric induction hob, fridge, freezer, microwave, and dishwasher, plus the comfort of electric underfloor heating. Gather around the large dining table and enjoy your delicious feast as you catch up on the day. There’s a separate utility room with a washing machine, tumble dryer, and airer; and a convenient ground-floor WC. There’s a step up from the kitchen to the conservatory where you can relax and enjoy the garden views. Head upstairs to find the family bathroom with a bath (with hand-held shower attachment), separate shower, and WC, plus a cosy double bedroom, all on the first floor. The remaining bedrooms are tucked into the eaves on the second floor: a stylish double bedroom and a children’s bunk bedroom (please note there are some sloping ceilings on this floor).
