The Old Dairy, 200 years old and newly converted
The Old Dairy is a 200 year old building which has just been the subject of a fabulous renovation and conversion into a two bedroom, two bathroom cottage, one of which is on-suite. The property is just four miles from the county town of Lewes, East Sussex.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are on the ground floor whilst the living accommodation and fully equipped kitchen is on the first floor. All bed linen and towels are provided. Bedroom 1 has a king size bed and bedroom 2 has two single beds.
The property has a balcony with far reaching views to the Ashdown forest and farmland beyond, and an oak staircase leading to a cobbled area below. Outside, at the rear of the property, is a small cobbled sitting area with two benches and table, suitable for four. Also at the rear of the property are the lovely gardens of Handlye Farmhouse which guests are most welcome to enjoy.
We have many birds including ducks, geese, turkeys, peacocks, chickens and a parrot which run free at the owner's property and so we regret we cannot cater for guests with their own pets.
There is Ultrafast broadband at this property and a large TV in the living area. The property is also well equipped, including a washing machine, dishwasher, fridge etc and all the appliances are new Bosch units.
The Old Dairy is well located. It is just 15 mins walk from the centre of Barcombe Cross village which has a Post Office, grocery stores and a fine public house, called the Royal Oak. The pub offers good food and fine Harvey’s ales. Also within walking distance is the Rainbow public house in Cooksbridge, which has a restaurant and carvery.
Barcombe Mills and the Anchor pub with its boating are just a five minute drive away. The city of Brighton with its many attractions is 25 minutes drive and Goodwood motor racing circuit about 50 minutes by car.

We had a lovely time staying in the Old Dairy. It‘s a comfortable and well decorated space. All the rooms were clean and the surrounding barns and Farm House made a charming ensemble. We especially enjoyed spotting pheasants from the balcony in the living room every morning. The hosts Robin and Christine were very helpful and welcoming. Overall, I highly recommend a stay in the Old Dairy !
We had a great stay at this beautiful apartment. It was so well equipped and the hosts were so so friendly and made us feel very welcome and at home. Location was very good to the local towns and amenities. Loads of lovely pubs in the area too. Would stay again if we happened to be in the area. Thanks again! 😊
We mainly came to stay to go to 2 operas at Glyndebourne and catch up with friends. We loved the Old Dairy, comfortable and well equipped and ideal for the 4 of us. We loved our visits to Firle Place and to Farleys. We hope to return next year.
Beautifully fitted out property with everything we needed for our two week stay. Hosts very welcoming and helpful. We loved the garden and the birds (and their eggs!). We went on some lovely walks cross country to the church and to Barcombe Mills.Wish we'd had our bikes with us as it was perfect area for a bit of cycling.
A wonderful base from which to explore Sussex, Hampshire and Kent. The upside down arrangement allows for lovely views over the countryside complete with sheep, lambs and pheasants. The property is thoughtfully equipped, down to plenty of power points, some with both C and USB ports. The kitchen is full of just about everything you could need. Attention to detail is everywhere. A lovely, comfortable place to relax. Definitely a place to revisit. Highly recommended!
Everything was perfect. Robin and Christine are charming and welcoming hosts. It was wonderful to wander in the garden with the peacocks and other birds.
Everything in The Old Dairy was in perfect order and spotless. Beds comfortable. Our only slight criticism is the proximity to the road, not exactly busy but pretty regular traffic and some of it very noisy. But that's a very small problem really, especially if you use the bedroom at the back.
We had been before and knew just how ideal the Old Dairy was for our group. The kitchen is a joy and the bedrooms and bathrooms ideal for the 4 of us. We were staying to go to operas at Glyndebourne and the old dairy is ideally situated for that. We hope to stay there again.
A wonderful place to stay with exceptional hosts! Beautifully renovated dairy with amazing attention to detail. Gorgeous surroundings in the countryside. The only opportunities for improvement would be a more comfortable and newer mattress, as well as the option to block out light in the bedrooms - staying in summer meant the light entered the room very early in the morning and didn’t go down until very late at night.Otherwise, we were very pleased with our stay for the week and highly recommend the place!
