Our Square's History: John Elger's Development, 1853–59
By the end of the 1840s building in Rutland Gate had petered out, but early in 1851 an agreement was drafted between Elizabeth Manners and John Elger, who had been developing the adjoining Kingston House estate since the mid-1840s, for completing the southern part of the street. However, it was not until 1853 that work got under way. Several houses were started in the autumn, and soon afterwards Elger bought the freehold of all the remaining vacant ground from the Manners family.
During the next six years the whole of southern Rutland Gate was built up by Elger , together with Rutland Mews East and West and a roadway linking Rutland Gate with his development on the Kingston House estate. It was presumably at this time that the high brick wall along the south side of Ennismore Street was built, shutting off Brompton Road and its northern hinterland from the exclusive culs-de-sac opposite Hyde Park.

Week in Knightsbridge...

Great location - walkable to many major landmarks & well situated for mass transit. The property manager was very accessible for any questions & requests. The flat was a little 'tight' for five adults - but no matter, we were just there to sleep & do laundry, so it was absolutely fine for our needs - no complaints, just an observation. The flat was equipped with everything we need for washing, cooking, and any day-to-day needs. I'd go back there again.

Disappointed

I am disappointed to write this review about our recent stay. We were excited to stay at the property we booked, but upon arrival, we were told that the property was no longer available and were given another property instead. This was a major inconvenience as we had specifically chosen the property we booked for its location and amenities. To make matters worse, the property we were given was not as clean as we had hoped. There were visible signs of dust and dirt throughout the property, and it was clear that the cleaning had not been thorough. This made us feel uncomfortable and like we could not fully relax in the space. Additionally, the beds in the property were very hard, which made it difficult to get a good night's sleep. The space itself was also quite cramped, which added to our discomfort. Overall, our stay at this property was disappointing. We did not get the property we paid for, and the cleanliness and comfort of the property we were given did not meet our expectations. We hope that the host takes steps to address these issues for future guests.

Perfect Location for a London Vacation

This is not the location that we stayed at during our recent vacation to London - the review will be about the other location. First of all, the owner was fabulous. There was an issue with the previous renters at this location and the owner was able to provide an alternative rental so that we still were able to enjoy our time in London without worrying about where to stay. The owner communicated with us often prior to and during our trip to make sure everything was okay and that we didn't need anything. The location of were we stayed was fabulous. We walked to many different locations and the Tube was easy to access when we were tired of walking. The owner got us in touch with a driver to pick us up from the airport for 65 Pounds so we didn't have to figure out public transportation when we arrived in London. Great location - Great space to sleep / rest - Great experience with the owner!

Great location to be able to get anywhere

A great spot for local travel with buses and trains so close by. The owner was extremely helpful and great to deal with! Comfy beds, good facilities, easy for 3 of us..

Lovely

The owner, Anne Marie, was quite helpful with all aspects of our stay as were the individuals who checked us in and who we hired (through Anne Marie) to take us into the countryside for the day to visit the private gardens of Prince Charles (beautiful). The location was quiet and pretty and felt very safe. I wish we could have stayed longer!

The owner is a lovely lady who greets you when you arrive and gives you lots of useful information to get around in the city, as well as a detailed house tour. The pick up from the airport was nice (cost us 55 pounds, which is not bad). The driver helped with the suitcases as well. Knightsbridge was THE perfect location for our stay! Its an elegant neighborhood. From the flat we walked to the Palace, then through the Green Park we made our way to Leiscester Square. The flat is 3 mins walking distance from Harrod’s and there are lots of nice restaurants in the area. There is a Boots store right around the corner, a few markets where you can purchase basic needs like milk, eggs etc. Also, there are a quite a few pharmacies around which came handy for us when we needed medicine for our daughter. The flat heats up very well (great insulation), with 24/7 hot water, equipped with everything you need in the kitchen. We downloaded Citymapper application like the owner suggested when we arrived and got quite good use out of it. You can hire a cab, car share, hop on a bus or tube, it tells you the shortest ways and the cost while giving you step by step directions on where to catch a bus if that’s what was selected as transportation. Overall, we enjoyed our time and had zero complaints about the apartment. It was a great stay. Thanks for everything!

London Diversion

After our Italian was diverted and we ended back in London, we loved our stay in this lovely flat. Our host was, hands down, the best host we've had our entire trip. She continually provided suggestions for our stay and was always accessible.

Fantastic location..previlage to stay in this high end property!

Exactly as advertised..Anne texted to check if all ok and if we needed anything, taxi driver Saeed was a gentleman and full of local knowledge. We had a fantastic 4 nights in London and can not recommend this apartment and location enough..An absolute previlage to be able to stay in this location. We are planning our return visit soon and hope to stay here again if possible. Thankyou.

New Year's in London

We had a great stay in this Knightsbridge flat over New Year's. The owner and housekeeper were very responsive, providing information about dining, tickets, and activities, and quickly responding to our request for extra pillowcases. The pictures online are accurate. The flat is located in a lovely area and we felt very safe and secure. The kitchen was well-stocked for cooking at the flat.

AnneMarie was a perfect host. When we got there she gave us a tour of the neighborhood and ideas for things to do. She also check in on us to make sure everything was good. The apartment has a ton of amenities. I also really liked the neighborhood. It was quiet and close to a lot of things. Would definitely stay here again.

Knightsbridge (Ovington Square)

Nice location in Knightsbridge, quiet neighborhood, in a three stories building with elevator. We had booked for a location half miles away, but were switched to this one due to the British Airways strike. The apartment was comfortable, with a few glitches, WiFi not working when we first arrived, the hot water was lukewarm & had to be adjusted, Anne Marie the landlady was quick to respond to theses instances. Although this area was called to be safe, one should watch out for scammers in and around this area. London Heathrow most stressful airport I have been to, TSA very strict with all kind of restrictions on liquid, everyone should allow to be there at least 2 to 3hours before departure. Lesson learned, if you check your bags make sure you pack as much as you can in it, and carry the bare minimum needed of your belongings thru TSA

Heart of London

We enjoyed our stay in AnneMarie’s Knightsbridge flat. We felt safe and had easy access to many sites via two tube stations. We spent one long beautiful evening walking through Hyde Park and Kensington Garden. Both are just a short walk away. We really enjoyed the time we spent with Saeed, who picked us up at Heathrow and drove us to several out of London sites. He is delightful and he made touring so easy for us. I would definitely recommend this flat. Do a little homework before you arrive to have a sense of where you are - and you will have a lovely taste of London.

This flat is in a wonderful location. It was very easy to walk to Hyde park, tube stations, Kensington palace and Buckingham palace. Anne Marie was a great host. Incredible property

Couldn’t ask for more!

This flat is not only in a wonderful quiet little neighborhood and walking distance to many sights in London, but Anne is one of the nicest and most lovely property owners we’ve ever worked with. We traveled with 3 teenagers (16,15,12) and the flat was perfect for us. The couch folds into bunk beds and the chair folds on into a bed. Both were very comfortable, as well our bed in the bedroom. Anne met us at the flat and explained everything to us. She was also so helpful with suggestions on wonderful restaurants to try. Per her recommendation, we went to Giovanni’s, which is a short walk from the flat, and enjoyed our favorite dinner during our stay! Thanks again, Anne! We hope to visit you again soon!

Lovely stay in heart of city

This flat was a lovely & quiet place from which to base our explorations of London. Two nearby Tube stations, the V&A, & Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens on the doorstep make this location convenient to all manner of London sights. The apartment was cozy, clean, and full of amenities that made our stay easy and comfortable. Communication with the property manager was excellent, and if we had any problems—which we did not—I feel confident that they would have been addressed immediately. The rides to & from the flat on arrival & departure were also extremely helpful amenities offered by the property manager, and they made the check-in & departure processes even easier than we expected. We hope to return to London, and we certainly hope to have a chance to stay at this flat in future. Thank you so much for our fantastic stay.
