Secluded Hideaway Cottage By Mt Stream Near Hiking, Biking, Skiing, Hot Springs

We both have lived in this unique and peaceful part of the Sierras not far from Lake Tahoe for over 40 years, and when we met 27 years ago and were searching for a piece of property on which to build our dream home, friends would ask us where our favorite location was. It was always Alpine County, and more specifically, a stretch of the West Fork of the Carson River which meanders through the famous old Ace Hereford Ranch. Miraculously, in 2001 a small 20-acre section of the ranch became available, complete with an old rambling Cliff May ranch house badly in need of repair.

After purchasing our dream-come-true, concurrently with the restoration process, we began building a cottage near the main house for our retired parents.

The property is resplendent with willow and wild rose thickets providing a protective home for quite literally hundreds of California Quail as well as the occasional Mt. Quail and elusive Chukkar. It wasn't long before the site became affectionally known as Quail Hollow.

The cozy cottage was built in the Arts and Crafts style by local friends and craftsmen, utilizing green materials and local stone. The numerous windows in every room welcome the rising sun in the East and take full advantage of the awe-inspiring view of the Carson River and the stunning volcanic basalt cliffs beyond. The kitchen, living room, dining nook and reading nook are all part of a spacious yet comforting great room which invites conversation and comraderie. The sleeping areas are quiet and comforting, the patios soothing and restful. The local wildlife which may include bobcat, raccoon, beaver, wild turkeys and muskrat often saunter past the dining nook window, and of course the ever-present quail and hummingbirds appreciate an occasional handout, the former showing off their adorable families of tiny 'quailets' throughout the summer months. Bald and Golden Eagle soar overhead, Jays nest in the nearby pines and Cliff Swallows build their mud colonies on the cliffs.

A peaceful presence can always be found here, whether the Autumn colors have begun to dazzle, a dusting of fresh snow is on the ground or when the summer-blooming lavender is ahum with bees, as the sounds of the city and the pressures of everyday life are left far behind. Come rest your spirit here, explore the area, paint a landscape, work on the story you started to write, bring several favorite books to read, and return home refreshed and rejuvenated.

Wonderful
We had a wonderful stay. The place was amazing and felt like a home, not a rental. So many special details. And our host Susan treated us like friends coming for a visit, rather than vrbo renters. She is a gem, and so is the place.

Peace and tranquility
After a crazy summer kitchen remodel and the start of school for my daughter and me (I'm a teacher), our family needed a peaceful getaway and that is exactly what we found at Quail Hollow. When you pull up to the gate of the property and see the amazing bluff, when you get out of the car and hear the rushing river, when you meet the delightful owner, Susan . . . you'll know you've made the right choice of property. The entire area is incredibly beautiful with lots of hiking opportunities, and yet Markleeville with a great brewery and market is just a short drive away. As for the house and property, the pictures don't do it justice. The view is jaw-dropping and the house itself is gorgeous and incredibly cozy. A bedroom and bathroom are on each side of the house, with a wonderful living room with stunning fireplace and comfy reading nooks -- a great fit for our family! We hope to return, sooner rather than later!

Wonderful !
Susan's cozy cottage is a great place to relax and recharge. The cottage is very private. The location, right along the river, can't be beat. The patio and several seating areas and french doors all face out to the river, so that one can enjoy it's presence even indoors. The bedrooms are set at either side of the house, with a large living space in between. It had pretty much every amenity that I could want during our visit.

Pretty Much Perfect
Quail Hollow is a beautiful home placed in a beautiful, serene setting on the Carson river. I actually saw quail one day and birds of all kinds flock to this place, only adding to the charm. I found myself recalling other reviewers words and thinking 'Accurate. ' Basically, if you choose to stay here, you'll be making the right choice. Though lovely, the photos don't do the space justice, it's warm and clean and has everything you need; it's laid out perfectly for two couples, with each bedroom on opposite ends of the house, each with it's own private patio; the daybeds are a dream space; the sunroom is my personal dream space; there IS a flat screen tv tucked away, but we only used it once because the Fireplace is The Best and is engaging all on its own; also, the bathtub will convert you if you're not a "bath person" just give it a try... Susan is the perfect host and I look forward to hanging with her next time we stay, which I'd say is unusual for a rental scenario! If you stay here, please respect the space, read Susans guestbook, it's well-written, entertaining, and informative- I felt like I would have had a different experience if I hadn't read it the first night honestly. Phew, long review! Thanks for everything Susan and see you again soon!

Quail Hollow is a treasure
This is our third time staying at Quail Hollow, and it is just a dreamy place to get away from it all. The house is stunningly beautiful and cozy. And Susan immediately feels like an old friend. We can't recommend Quail Hollow enough!

Amazing setting for a secluded weekend.
My husband reserved this beautiful property for my birthday weekend. We only spent 2 nights here but could easily see spending a week or more. The minute we arrived, we set up on the patio outside the living room/kitchen area to listen to the Carson river and soak up the beauty of the eastern Sierra, watch the quail and humming birds, read and enjoy. The house is spacious and nicely furnished. The kitchen had all the tools, dinnerware, and accessories of a well stocked house, which made preparing meals a joy. The king bed was particularly comfortable. Susan was very responsive with questions via phone and text. I'm so glad we discovered Quail Hollow. We will be back!
