This is one of those rare places where the hospitality outshines even the incredible setting. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel like guests in someone's home rather than a hotel — warm, genuinely attentive, and full of insider tips on the best spots in the Sassi to catch sunset, where to eat, and how to navigate Matera's winding stone streets.
The rooms themselves are beautiful, carved into the historic Sassi with all the atmosphere you'd hope for. Clean, functional, spacious, comfortable.
If you're visiting Matera, stay here.
Wonderful stay! The staff were very helpful and polite and the house wine were really good. If I would come back to Matera, I would love to stay here again!
Amazing staff, amazing location, breakfast was lovely. Everything was super clean and lovely bed linen and towels. We couldnt fault anything and we would highly recommend.
Wonderful! This is the most unique hotel we’ve ever stayed. Matera is pretty special and this hotel 💯 adds to the charm. It’s old world feeling but with all the modern things we love. A great common area, daily (and plentiful) breakfast and beautiful patio to enjoy their wine and charcuterie. They welcomed us with a glass of wine which was classy after a long car ride.
Great bedding/pillows/towels and daily housekeeping.
We slept with our window open every night (3 total) and you could hear a pin drop the town is so quiet.
Convenient to everything and lots of good restaurants close by.
I would use their car service recos … we used Uber and they are not as familiar with Matera which is difficult to drive, park etc.
Spectacular property with helpful staff. Unique, imaginative room and bath arrangement. For us (me 82kg and my spouse 66kg) the bed was very hard and difficult to sleep on. This is a personal preference however, and a very, very firm bed may be preferred.
Beautiful cave room, very spacious. Hotel residence itself was stunning, with beautiful dining area for breakfast and communal couch area. Highly recommend for a Matera stay. Lovely wine from their winery too.
Loved this hotel. Arrival was warm, welcoming and we had a lovely welcome drink. We then went to our room (room 8, a superior double). It was absolutely stunning. We had 3 balconies with magnificent views over the caves.
Breakfast was within a cave (our room wasn’t - although was still sandstone and beautiful, without the damp issues of being in a cave!) - with a lovely choice including ample gluten free options. The lady who served us at breakfast was so kind, friendly and made us feel welcome every morning.
We also ate at Radino one night and had a lovely meal. It was our only non Michelin guide or Michelin star meal and it exceeded our expectations so we’d recommend this.
It will always hold a special place in our hearts as it is where my boyfriend proposed to me - on our balcony, just us in the middle of Matera - totally magical. You must visit Matera and we’d highly recommend you stay here
Had a great and cosy 2 night stay. The rooms are super unique. Easy to get to with a taxi from the bus station. Very friendly and welcoming staff, would stay here again.
The room was beautiful, renovated but still with so much history evident. The staff were lovely and there were lots of places to eat and easy access to interesting parts of the city.
Amazing hotel! Love the rooms and the view. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. They offered us transportation from the parking to the hotel. And the location was excellent, close to everything. Breakfast was ok tho
A delightful stay at an unusual, quirky but wonderful hotel. Helpful and friendly staff. Lovely wine too! So quiet and convenient to everything including diverse choice of great eateries. Loved Matera! Shuttle service and parking was also efficient. Definitely recommend Il Palazzotto.
