"Do not know where to start. WE PREPAID when we registered, but the owner said we needed to make another full. There were only two plates, no cutting knives, the glasses had sticky goo all over them, the stove did not work, there was no drinking water available. The couch is a very very old futon that looks like it has been picked off the street. The front door knob came off the second time we used it (it was loose and was about to fall off when we arrived). "Overall extremely poor. Construction littered the property, loud bangs and tools served as an alarm clock at 6am until the afternoon. Check in took long as the Vrbo listing address takes you very far from where the house actually is and communication proved to be difficult as well. Also lack of direction with garbage leading to a strong odor"

"terrible communication the entire process. We thought it was in San Marcos as the listing said. We didn't sleep the entire time as it was so noisy. There was mold throughout the entire shower and it was filthy as well as cold. terrible "

"This place is across the street from the biggest party place in San Pedro. There is also an air hockey machine right outside the bedroom window that people played at any hour.
I left early and found a quieter hotel. The shower hot water didn’t work, and the toilet stopped having running water- the front desk staff was extremely nice and helpful, the owner was difficult and unpleasant."

"It is set out as a Luxury apartment but can't really qualify as such. It is nice, but quite noisy as it is right next to a restaurant with live music. Also quite smelly from all the restaurants' grey water just flowing into the lake outside the windows. The bathroom is also very damp with mold on the walls. Everything else was good though, and the hosts were very responsive."

"This room had an AMAZING view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. It is a lakefront property with the room on the lower section facing the water. The bedroom and bathroom had amazing views and the hosts were very communicative for check in and check out. We needed to leave our bags at the property for a while while we did a tour and they were also able to help us store and retrieve our luggage when we were ready to leave."

"Beautiful and peaceful place to stay at Lake Atitlán. Amazing lake and volcano views, very clean cabins, and a relaxing atmosphere away from the crowds. The hosts were welcoming and the location was perfect for exploring nearby towns. Would definitely stay again."

"Lots of stairs, as it is throughout the lake but the staff was so helpful and sweet! Great service! Room was comfy and spacious. Overall a great stay! Also the breakfast included was delicious and a decent size meal !!!"
"We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Mercy and would definitely recommend it. The location is excellent—just a short walk from Umbrella Street, the main dock, restaurants, cafés, and other popular attractions around Lake Atitlán.
Our room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The hotel grounds and gardens are beautiful, creating a peaceful atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Breakfast was included and offered a nice variety of options.
The only thing we wish had been made clearer before booking is that the rooms do not have air conditioning or a television. Fortunately, the weather in the area is cool, especially at night, so we never actually needed A/C. However, as travelers who are used to hotels offering air conditioning, it was surprising to arrive and find that it wasn’t available.
The hotel also offers free parking, which we appreciated. My only suggestion would be to improve the appearance of the entrance and parking area, as it could benefit from being paved or better landscaped to match the beauty of the rest of the property. Additionally, a couple of the outdoor furniture pieces, while beautiful, needed minor repairs because some nails were exposed.
It was great to see that the hotel is expanding and continuing to grow, which speaks well of its future. Overall, we had a great experience and would happily stay here again."
"This hotel is really unique and really feels integrated with the nature around it. It was very clean, comfortable, and had great views. But the best part about our experience there was the staff. The manager was so helpful and kind. I had mistakenly booked for the wrong date and booked an extra day (not sure how I managed that). The manager completely took care of us and not only prepared a room for us, but she sorted things out with Expedia so I was reimbursed for the extra booked night and didn't have to deal with that myself while on vacation. She was amazing. I didn't even have to ask for the help, she took the initiative and took care of everything for me! I would definitely stay there again. Just be aware that there are a lot of stairs getting to check in and the rooms, so this is a hotel better suited for physically fit folks!"
"Staff is great, they do always that extra to help you. Rooms are incredibly spacious, breakfast was soooo good, it is definitely a gem hidden in the beautiful Quetzaltenango. My wife and daughter love the place. I will return soon for sure."
"Refugio del Volcan is situated right outside of the busy part of San Pedro, so it is super quiet and peaceful. It’s also gated making it feel very secure. We felt comfortable leaving our windows and front door open. Being outside of town means you must either walk or get a tuk tuk, so be prepared for that. The walk up to the villas is quite steep and a bit laborious. There is no lighting, so you’ll need a phone or headlamp to guide your way. The villa was plenty big and clean. We were disappointed there wasn’t a coffee maker for mornings - restaurants and cafes aren’t close. Overall, we happy with the stay."
