Takachiho Gorge (高千穂��峡, Takachiho-kyō) is a narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River. Volcanic basalt columns line the sheer cliffs of the gorge, originally as a result of Mt. Aso’s eruption and further shaped through time by the flowing river, creating interesting shapes and patterns. . The 17-meter Manai Falls is probably the highlight of the tour, as it cascades into the river below and along with the gorge and the bridge makes for a very picturesque location. Normally, boat rides are offered to visitors but during the day of our visit it was temporarily stopped due to the high waters brought about by the recent typhoon.
