History buffs will be itching to explore Alnwick Castle (9 miles), famous for its connections to Harry Potter and where visitors can learn to fly a broomstick before losing themselves in the bamboo labyrinth at Alnwick Garden. Avid walkers are well served, too. Follow the Northumberland Coast Path (joined at Amble Harbour), where rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and sweeping sea views stretch for miles.
