It's a bit out of the way, so make sure when planning your way there you follow the shuttle instructions or have another way of getting there via car or taxi. "Despite Fudoin being a temple, the accommodations were truly excellent. Both the staff and the monks were extremely pleasant and helpful. It struck a balance of being respectful to the space with luxury. We opted for a garden view room and weren't disappointed. For the small extra cost we got a private toilet and bath, the most space we've had in Japan, and an unbeatable view. We spent more time in the room than expected. The food was great and the dining room and dinner rooms were both beautiful and felt spacious. The 9p curfew was later than many neighboring locations meaning we had time to do the night tour in Okonuin, which was very special. The morning ceremony was also well balanced for westerners. It was in Japanese and English where appropriate and let the audience participate. Koya was lovely and not overcrowded (3rd week of April). Refreshing after coming through the tourist crush in Kyoto. Overall a great place to spend time. "

"Two wonderful nights at Soujiin, Koyasan. Beautiful property in centre of town with an authentic traditional Japanese experience. Meals are traditional Japanese, & are all vegetarian. Highly recommended!!"

"We got to stay here for the night of news years eve and enjoyed a vegetarian dinner. My husband cannot eat any wheat or gluten so the monks made sure he had a special vegetable dish with no soy sauce. The rooms were at first cold but with the heaters warmed up nicely. The hot baths were nice. We enjoyed walking the town and seeing the various shrines and temples and large cemetery too. The huge cypress trees were amazing. And the cemetery was lit at night too. We walked around in the evening and heard the huge bells rung 108 times for the new year. It was snowing and very magical. The town people have out free sake and hot tea to visitors for the New Year’s Eve ceremony. We awoke early and joined the monks for early prayers. We slept on futons (very comfortable) and the bathrooms were very clean. "

"A very different experience for a foreigner, and one that I cherished as a student of Buddhism. If you aren’t adventurous, I don’t recommend it, and if you go, please be curious, open, and full of respect. The non-sleeping rooms will be very cold in winter, the food served is the food served, without changes available, there are rules about which slippers to wear where and what can be photographed, etc. If you’re interested in deep travel (versus hedonism), you will be gifted and changed. Otherwise, please don’t go. "

"This will have to be my most favorite part of my trip to Japan. You will have to intentionally come here for the temple stay. First and foremost, the facility will ONLY ACCEPT CASH payment for the stay. Though my wife and I were not too fond of the shared wash rooms to wash up. I don’t believe the facility has rooms with private wash rooms. The staff was exceptionally nice and helpful. They offer traditional breakfast and dinner(vegan friendly, though I am not, very delicious!). Wake up early(6AM I believe) for the prayer and breakfast after. The town does close early with no convenience store to buy snacks if you’re hungry. "
