A Gruta dos Moinhos Velhos (juntamente com a Gruta da Pena e a Gruta da Contenda), faz parte de uma grande rede de galerias com mais de 11 Km de extensão, constituindo dos mais importantes sistemas subterrâneos do Maciço Calcário Estremenho. Caracteriza-se pela existência de dois coletores paragenéticos fósseis, de diâmetro aproximadamente decamétrico, com afluentes desenhando uma rede dendrítica e um conjunto de galerias semi-ativas de traçado dendrítico a norte e angulado a sul. A zona fóssil tem um desnível de 100 metros e a espessura da zona intermédia varia entre 80 metros a montante e 60 metros a jusante, circulando a água por galerias singenéticas, do quadrante norte para o quadrante sul, em direção à exsurgência da Gruta da Pena.

Podem definir-se quatro fases na evolução do sistema. A primeira é representada por galerias freáticas superficiais, de pequeno diâmetro, a segunda pelo coletor paragenético da Galeria Gémea, a terceira pela Galeria Grande e seus afluentes e a última pelas galerias ativas e semi-ativas dos andares inferiores.

"Fantastic area right in the heart of the castle. However, tricky to get to as you need to park your car 10 minutes away and then navigate through the cobbled streets. The house is very quaint, but has damp issues so you can smell mould ( although it was winter, so maybe it is better in summer). Heating was a bit basic. Barthroom had a vague smell of sewerage- not really strong, but enough for me to question the high price of the accomodation. Needs to spend a lot more on plumbing and heating, or...

"We had a great time. Perfect location for day trips into Caldas da Rainha and Nazare. After buzzing about the area it was nice to return to a quiet spot overlooking the ocean. Good restaurants 5 minutes away."

Nos quartos os roupeiros estão cheios de coisas dos proprietários e na cozinha muita da louça nos armários estava mal lavada para poder ser usada. Piscina e espaço exterior agradável, não fosse o cheiro a esgoto que se vai sentido naquela zona, provavelmente proveniente de uma fossa ou de uma caixa mal vedada. "

"This was a magical stay. One of the closest homes to the castle. This unit had the most comfortable beds. Outdoor space is plenty with amazing views. Parking is attached and included, made unloading so easy. We felt like the only visitors, but had a few dining options. "Lovely house, lagoon area has breeze even at height of summer in August. Good base, Obidos, 20 mins away, is a medieval town with very impressive castle. Beautiful buildings with local artists selling paintings and prints, plenty of good restaurants. Lisbon is an hour away. A car is essential to get around, as the house is situated up a forested hill above lagoon. Excellent walks and runs around the lagoon, which is only 15 mins away by foot. Lots of activities available, we opted for kayaks...
