Whether holidaying in spring, summer, fall or winter, this bustling town has activities for everyone. In the warm months, there are local swim and fishing lakes within walking or biking distance, abundant locations for fly fishing, rafting, canoeing, and swimming holes in the Aude River. Mediterranean beaches are 90 minutes away and there one can sample seafood fresh from the morning's catch after a day of fun in the sun at either a beach club (think lying on comfy recliners with your favorite beverage delivered), or the relatively sparse public beach. Summer festivals in Quillan, and nearby towns, have great live music and entertainment for all ages. The summer Thursday night market takes place just outside the front door! Autumn brings celebrations of the wine harvests and mushroom hunting, crisp mornings and perfect days for hiking or biking. Brilliant fall foliage can best be seen when traveling through the scenic mountain routes of the Train Rouge. Enjoy a day at the spa in Rennes les Bains or Ax-les-Thermes. For winter enthusiasts, two ski stations are within a 75 minute drive and the prices are quite reasonable. And, there's a cultural schedule of musical revues, plays, and bands at the Quillan Espace throughout the cooler months. All year round, visitors can enjoy the Unesco Heritage Site of Carcassonne, the most filmed and photographed castle in the world, the Hermitage of Galamus, prehistoric cave tours, ruined Cathar castles, the Tautavel Museum, day trips to Perpignan and Spain - a mere 2 hours away by car. Don't have a car? Use one of our bikes or the local Llio bus routes, which run between Perpignan and Carcassonne for a mere 1 or 2 euros.
Excellent restaurants abount in this area, from the Michelin starred La table de Franck Putelat in Carcassonne, the Restaurant La Cour des Ducs and A Table in Couiza, La Galerie and the delicious wood fired pizzas from Papy Pizz in Quillan. You won't lack for choices! ArtVin3, a delightful wine bar with an extensive wine list and inviting courtyard, offers music on weekends. Les Grand Copains has a wide array of craft beers and local wines at competitive prices. At Salazar Winery in the next town, sample the famous Blanquette de Limoux, the first sparkling wine to be discovered, and other regional wines. On Sunday mornings, Esperaza holds its weekly market, renown for traditional and non-traditional wares. Mirepoix's very expansive and traditional Monday morning market invites one to stroll through the vast produce tables and stalls of domestic wares and clothes, and then have lunch under the medieval arcades surrounding the town center.
