Escape to the edge of Swaledale at Rubbing House, a charming one-bedroom stone cottage tucked high on a hillside near Marske. With panoramic views over rolling farmland and total seclusion, it’s an ideal countryside hideaway for couples.
Inside, rustic charm meets modern comfort: a spacious king bedroom with scenic views, a stylish bathroom with bath and separate shower, and a cosy living room with a wood-burning stove and full-length windows that flood the space with light. Cook up dinner in the fully equipped kitchen, or enjoy a morning coffee in the private garden overlooking the Dales.
Set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, walking and cycling routes start right from the door. After a day exploring, unwind in a local pub in Grinton or Reeth or visit nearby Richmond (15 mins by car) for its historic castle, riverside walks, and artisan shops.

Getting there
From the North
1. Travel southwards and join the A1 motorway (or equivalent major road) towards the Scotch Corner junction (Junction 53).
2. At Scotch Corner take the exit onto the A6108 signed for Richmond.
3. Continue through Richmond, staying on the A6108 towards the village of Reeth.
4. After approximately 4 miles beyond Richmond you’ll see a sign-post for Marske / Marrick / Hurst on the right — take that right turn.
5. Follow the country lane down into Marske. In the village, continue up the hill (Cordilleras Lane), take the first turning on the right after you come out of the trees (do not turn left into the property on the left-hand side).
6. Once you turn right, follow the lane until you reach Rubbing House.
7. Please note: the last section is a minor country lane; take care and drive slowly.
From the South
1. From the south, drive northwards on the A1 (or other major route depending on where you start) until you reach the Scotch Corner interchange (Junction 53).
2. At Scotch Corner, take the A6108 towards Richmond.
3. Drive through Richmond and continue on the A6108 towards Reeth.
4. About 4 miles beyond Richmond you will spot the right-hand turn signposted Marske / Marrick / Hurst. Take that right turn.
5. Follow the country lane down into Marske. In the village, continue up the hill (Cordilleras Lane), take the first turning on the right after you come out of the trees (do not turn left into the property on the left-hand side).
6. Continue along that lane until you arrive at the property.
Important Notes
• If your sat nav directs you to the house on the left as you exit the trees, please ignore that turn — the correct turn is the first right.
• The final approach is along a narrow country lane; please proceed with caution, and ensure your vehicle is suitable for such roads.
• Because of the rural setting, mobile signal may be patchy — keep an eye on landmarks and signs rather than relying solely on sat nav.
• We’ve found that many guests find the sign-post Marske / Marrick / Hurst helpful as a landmark for the turn.
