About this property

Charming Tower In A Medieval Property , private fishing lake

  • Courceriers is in north-east Mayenne near the village of Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers which takes its name from the site. It is easily accessed from the Channel ports, four hours drive from Calais and the Eurotunnel terminal and two hours from Caen. Steeped in history, Courceriers was once home to prehistoric man. It has also been a Roman camp ("Caesar's Court"), an important site in Gaul (the Gallic Roman Empire) and a medieval fortress. After this was sacked by English armies in 1419, a château was built on the site, also sadly now dispatched into history. You will be living part of that history when you stay in the tower, all that remains of the château. All around are reminders of Courceriers' glorious past - the massive fortress ramparts, the ruins of the Keep, the valley that was dammed and flooded by the Romans to keep the heathen hordes at bay, the manor houses and the chapel, built in 1418, La Portail (the gatehouse), built in 1657, the old mill......

Some places you walk into and think: here I can exhale. That is exactly how our ten days felt. We stayed in the tower, the only rental on the estate, with our 11-year-old son. Living here is a bit like being on a boat, but vertical: kitchen, living room, bedroom, mezzanine with an extra bed and bathroom, each on its own floor. The thick walls kept it pleasantly cool even in the August heat. Everything is there, from games and jeu de boules to a dishwasher and washing machine. The interior is largely handmade, with the atmosphere of an old country house. Outside: a private garden, farmland on one side, the ruins of the old castle on the other. Sophie and Damien make the stay special. Tips by email before arrival, cookies and vegetables from their garden waiting for us, fresh croissants a few days later; when the dishwasher broke down, a replacement was in place within hours. You never feel like a tenant here, but like guests they genuinely enjoy sharing their place with. It is wonderfully quiet: birds, wind and a little stream. The night sky is truly dark, during the Perseids we watched one shooting star after another. Walks start at the door and the Mayenne region offers a lot to see and do. The private fishing lake was a highlight: the carp took our boilies eagerly and we caught quite a few. All three of us were sad to leave. Five stars, and we hope to return.

Lovely little lake

We booked to fish the lake as we often just go fishing in France and it’s tranquil and peaceful, the lake itself isn’t massive and you can hit most of it from the road side, as long as your good at casting! Fishing wise we caught every day smallest carp around 1lb up to 23lb, with 2 other carp at 22 & 20lb as well as quite a few upper doubles. Depths wise far bank 2ft road side 7-9ft, overall a really good place and worth visiting. The carp do take Bollie’s, we mainly used and caught on wafters semi buoyant bollie’s. Overall a lovely little place and very quiet as well.

One of the mopst relaxing holidays we've ever had!

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we loved our French adventure. The bell tower was a fabulous and quirky accommodation choice, like nothing we've stayed in before. The calm and relaxed nature of the holiday offered us opportunity to really connect as a family whilst also offering a chance to row on the lake, paddle in local streams and explore local attractions; all whilst trying to improve our French. This was all set in the beautiful backdrop of rural France. What really made the holiday for us though was how welcome we were all (us, our 2 children and our dog) made to feel by our hosts Sophie and Damien and our four legged host Badka! We would totally recommend the Bell Tower to anyone looking to relax, enjoy something a bit different and gain a sense of feeling at home in a place that most likely feels very different from home.

A wonderful hide-away

Such a uniique property. Everything catered for in a small space so it didn't feel small. Sadly couldn't swim in the lak but found a lovely swimming lake at Sille Plage. Sophie and Damien were generous, helpful and friendly and our dog loved hanging out with theirs.

Erholsamer besonderer Urlaub

Fantastische Unterkunft in historischen Gemäuern

Merci! Wim et Lieve (B)

Wow!!!

Very warm welcome with a list of essentials waiting for us including a lovely cake. Property itself is simply stunning and the surroundings out of this world. Nice lake with a good head of carp quite happy to take a bait whenever you decide to give it a go. The Tower is a refurbished medieval bell tower equipped with a spiral staircase. Entertainment from UK TV to books and games including a full sized table tennis table!!! What more could you ask for!!!

What a find!

We had a fantastic stay at this very unique property. Sophie and Damien were the most wonderful hosts. We enjoyed our short stay here very much. We loved relaxing in the grounds and listening to the birds sing whilst having barbecues in the sunshine! The tower is very cleverly designed and has everything you need and more. Our dog loved exploring the gardens and playing with their wonderful dog. If only we could have stayed longer!

Stunningly peaceful and charming.

We loved our stay in the tower, it was peaceful and quirky with everything you could possibly need. Winston our Sprocker spaniel loved the grounds where he could sniff out the most interesting smells. A great base for exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside and villages. Sophia and Damian were great hosts and we hope to return in the future.
