Sunset Ridge is a great road trip destination, centrally located between 3 and 4 hours from Dallas, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Shreveport, and Fayetteville.
Both Sunset Ridge and the nearby parks and attractions offer free parking. So driving is our recommended transportation option around here. The area is also home to tasty, family-friendly restaurants and beautiful natural scenery. Here are our favorite places:
Boondockers Landing - 1-mile drive McCurtain County Game Reserve - 24-mile drive Broken Bow Lake - 30-mile drive Cucumber Creek - 33-mile drive Beavers Bend State Park - 37-mile drive
Shasta's Burger Box - 4.5-mile drive When cooking for a group just doesn’t sound desirable after a long hike or kayak adventure, hop in the car and make a beeline for Shasta’s. This nearby burger joint serves patties and sandwiches that will please your whole group, even the kids and those picky eaters. Walk off your decadent meal with a wander through their gift shop, where you can find kitschy trinkets and homemade soaps.
Mountain Country Store - 2-mile drive More than just a place to shop, Mountain Country Store is the ultimate find for food and sundries in Smithville. Serving daily specials, hearty entrees, and fresh salads, the friendly staff here will make sure your whole group leaves with a smile. You can also find any essentials you may have forgotten to pack here, plus a few things that you want but don’t really need, but, hey, you’re on vacation!
Chopping Block Steakhouse - 27-mile drive For a taste of luxury during your outdoorsy getaway, make your way to Chopping Block Steakhouse, known for hand-cut steaks and, as they put it, “fall-off-the-bone ribs.” With a menu that features pasta, salads, sandwiches, and even a pound of crab legs, there’s no going hungry here. Set in a cozy cabin, this steakhouse is the ultimate date night, happy hour, or family reunion spot.
Grateful Head Pizza - 30-mile drive There are two types of people in this world: pizza lovers and people who just haven't had good pizza yet. Grateful Head fires up the best pies in the area, like the Hawaiian-inspired Maui Waui and the Big Frank - a meat lover’s dream. They may also have the most creative pizza names we’ve ever seen. To really get your appetite going, start off with some garlicky, cheese-stuffed breadsticks. Bonus points for their dog-friendly patio.
Rolling Fork Takery - 30-mile drive What exactly is a “takery,” you ask? In one of the more genius ideas to come to the restaurant industry, Rolling Fork specializes in take-out, but not your average burgers and fries-style take-out. Think homestyle appetizers, fresh salads, gourmet tacos, and hearty sandwiches, all made with high-quality ingredients and perfect for eating in the comfort of your scenic Sunset Ridge backyard. Although, if you prefer to eat there, Rolling Fork does have a lovely (heated!), dog-friendly porch.
Lighthouse Drive-In - 20-mile drive An experience worth driving across the Arkansas border. For burgers, brisket, fries, and malts with a side of old-school nostalgia, Lighthouse Drive-In is the perfect crowd-pleaser. On a hot summer day, not much tastes better than a scoop of their ice cream or a thick, creamy shake. Bring the whole family or some friends along as an excuse to try both!
Girls Gone Wine - 31-mile drive For a fun, adults-only escape, make your way to the lively tasting room at Girls Gone Wine in the heart of Hochatown. Featuring wines that are made on-site, the wine offers complimentary samples and a funky gift shop. It’s a great place to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or just the beginning of a well-deserved vacation.
Hochatown Petting Zoo - 31-mile drive A sure-fire way to delight kids of all ages (and adults!), Hochatown Petting Zoo is a perfect activity for when you need to mix up the days of fishing, hiking, and watersports. At this roadside attraction, you can feed, pet, and take selfies with the cute baby animals. The petting zoo boasts a collection of critters including miniature horses, raccoons, snakes, lizards, turkeys, and birds.
A to Z Guest Ranch - 11-mile drive Nestled in the Kiamichi Mountains, A to Z Guest Ranch is your go-to spot for horseback riding and ATV rentals. Slow down and enjoy nature during a guided trail ride, with packages ranging from one hour to a full day, or turn up the excitement with a ride on an ATV. Perfect for kids and adults, this nearby haven in the woods will give you a memorable day of fun with family or friends. We recommend calling or emailing to make a reservation.
Wild Boar Ridge - 2-mile drive A highlight of the Broken Bow Lake area is hunting, and there’s no better place to do it than Wild Boar Ridge. With a huge collection of wild game (including hogs and rams) and plenty of guidance for first-timers, there’s no wonder this place gets rave reviews. For a memorable activity and some great stories to tell later, Wild Boar’s seasoned guides are happy to show you around their neck of the woods, whether it’s your first hunt or your fiftieth.
Mountain Fork River 10-Mile Drive Mountain Fork, also known as the Mountain Fork of the Little River, is a 98-mile-long tributary of the Little River in western Arkansas and Southeastern Oklahoma in the United States. Hailed as the best whitewater stream in Oklahoma, the Mountain Fork River offers a year-round destination for the best trout fishing anywhere in the surrounding region. The river’s constant flow and cool waters are the ideal place to find brown and rainbow trout year-round, perfect for fly fishing in a region not commonly known as a fly fishing destination. The river also features plenty of rapids, small waterfalls, and rock gardens perfect for rafting, canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts, whether you seek leisurely float or a more challenging thrill ride
