"Despite Fudoin being a temple, the accommodations were truly excellent. Both the staff and the monks were extremely pleasant and helpful. It struck a balance of being respectful to the space with luxury. We opted for a garden view room and weren't disappointed. For the small extra cost we got a private toilet and bath, the most space we've had in Japan, and an unbeatable view. We spent more time in the room than expected. The food was great and the dining room and dinner rooms were both beautiful and felt spacious. The 9p curfew was later than many neighboring locations meaning we had time to do the night tour in Okonuin, which was very special. The morning ceremony was also well balanced for westerners. It was in Japanese and English where appropriate and let the audience participate. Koya was lovely and not overcrowded (3rd week of April). Refreshing after coming through the tourist crush in Kyoto. Overall a great place to spend time. "

"Two wonderful nights at Soujiin, Koyasan. Beautiful property in centre of town with an authentic traditional Japanese experience. Meals are traditional Japanese, & are all vegetarian. Highly recommended!!"

"Cool experience to stay in these lodgings. There is a heater in the room but the halls and bathrooms are pretty cold when it’s not warm out. The bath is amazing, so hot and relaxing. The morning prayers were very cool to experience. You do sleep on traditional futons and pillows, so if you’re picky about your pillow you might want to bring your own. The garden in the middle of the temple is beautiful as is the front garden. The check-in window is pretty small so I’d recommend working this into your trip when you’re coming from somewhere close. We came from Lake Ashi and it was very stressful trying to travel from that far away and make the check-in time. Overall I would definitely recommend staying here! "

"A very different experience for a foreigner, and one that I cherished as a student of Buddhism. If you aren’t adventurous, I don’t recommend it, and if you go, please be curious, open, and full of respect. The non-sleeping rooms will be very cold in winter, the food served is the food served, without changes available, there are rules about which slippers to wear where and what can be photographed, etc. If you’re interested in deep travel (versus hedonism), you will be gifted and changed. "I stayed for three nights. The hotel is clean and well ventilated. I was lucky enough to have a large and quiet room. The owner is very friendly and doesn't bother guests. But the only regret is that the floor noise is loud. It will be noisy if you live next to the stairs. I would come again if given the chance."
