What a great hostel!! The building is so great with wonderful architectural touches. Grounds are beautiful with picnic tables and a fire pit area. We stayed in the Cloud suite - which was the entire 3rd floor with private bath and kitchenette. Very spacious and had everything we needed. Would highly recommend!
Every was very clean. Pristine. The staff response was instant.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
The place was nice. We stayed in private bedroom. Very clean. Unfortunately, we shared a wall with bathroom and could hear everything happening in there. Bath towel and washcloth that was provided was very thin. There was no hand towels or paper towels provided to dry hands in bathroom?? They recommend bring your own towels??The extra bathrooms and showers were in lower level in the garage. Finishings in here were lacking and walking in the garage was not ideal barefoot or in socks. Overall for the price I think I expected more.

Very close to Summersville Lake.. Very peaceful natural setting.. If staying here, the cloud suite is the only private option on the third floor.
This is cabin in the woods that is like a hostel. I had the whole dorm room to myself. The service is techno; everything is done by phone. I was worried I would not be able to upload my pic of my license, but I got it done.

Disliked: Room comfort
We paid extra for the “private room” expecting it to have its own bathroom but it did not. There was one bathroom for the whole house to use. (There were additional toilets and showers in the unfinished basement, but it was a dungeon down there.) We booked two nights but we left after one and we booked another hotel that had a decent bathroom in the room. The Arete is definitely a hostel, not a hotel, and should be advertised as such. (We didn’t learn until we were already on the road that we should bring our own towels and top sheet. For $150 a night these things should be included.)
The house is beautifully nestled in nature and, while it’s a bit of a drive from the New River Gorge, it’s ideally situated for exploring Summersville Lake.
The construction doesn’t always have the most meticulous attention to detail, but what the property lacks in craftsmanship, it more than makes up for in thoughtful design, quality of light, character, and atmosphere. The house strikes a lovely balance between what feels like Nordic-inspired simplicity and warm, eclectic charm. If I had to describe the property in one word, it would be hygge—comfortable, inviting, unfussy, and designed around experience/presence.
Array of amenities inclide: a static line, bonfire pit, espresso machine, impressive cooktop, rentable paddleboards, pool table, coin laundry, laundry chutes, and patio spaces. None of these feel particularly ornamental; together, they make the house feel more like a well-considered retreat than simply a place to sleep.
We stayed in the suite, which was clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully laid out, as was the house as a whole. Ownership was approachable and responsive, which added to the ease and warmth of the stay.
I’d recommend the property and would absolutely come back. It’s the kind of place that encourages you to linger a little longer—coffee in hand, somewhere between an adventure and an afternoon with a book.
