  • Ritipanna is the Sinhalese term for stilt fishing, which is a traditional method for fishing practiced by most fishermen along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. This art is popularly seen in areas such as Ahangama, Koggala, Welipenna, Kathaluwa and Thalarambe. A narrow pole is tied to a stick that is anchored on the sea bed. Fisher folk climb onto this stick and settle on the pole for a few hours in an effort to catch some fish. Fishermen found on stilts are those who do not have access to sophisticated equipment for fishing. These men can make a living simply with the help of two wooden poles to make a stilt. One pole is nailed onto the sea bed and the other is placed like a cross bar and acts as a plank for the fishermen to sit on. Each stilt can accommodate only one fisherman. For catching fish, they create a rod made of Kithul, and a small plastic bag is tied around their waist to hold the fish that they catch. With one hand they hold onto the stilt and with the other they hold the rod that catches fish. The tradition of stilt fishing will always be practiced by those who cannot afford to invest in modern fishing equipment. #likealocal

Beautifully designed luxurious hotel

Nestled amid picturesque rice paddies and surrounded by the tranquility of nature, this hotel offers a truly breathtaking escape. The loft-style room was impeccably designed, featuring a mini kitchen and expansive indoor and outdoor bathrooms. The bed provided exceptional comfort, and the staff were both welcoming and attentive, ensuring a seamless stay. Every aspect of my experience was flawless!

I had the pleasure of staying at Miss Ceylon with my wife and two daughters. This property is stunning! If you love architecture and design this establishments will tick all the boxes. This is a relatively new property that is further inland surrounded by gorgeous lush rice fields and lush rainforests. The staff were warm and attentive. Miss Ceylon is managed by Tatiana who was amazing and made our stay a memorable one. Note: if you are into partying or being loud and boisterous then this place might not be for you. An exceptional property run by exceptional people. Thanks for a memorable stay and hope to be back again one day.

Great!

There were a few hiccups on arrivals as Miss Ceylon didn’t have my booking, which made it awkward (thankfully they had space) but it was rectified straight away. The manager Udaya was amazing, he looked after me so well the whole time and made sure my stay at Miss Ceylon was enjoyable. I was the only person staying at the hotel, so was lucky to have the sole attention of the staff. The rooms are extremely spacious, huge in-fact, very comfortable bed. There was an issue regarding payment on departure as Miss Ceylon could only accept payment in cash or bank transfer, I believe this was only a one off issue and it got rectified by the owner who got in touch with me to apologise. Overall a great place, lovely helpful Udaya was wonderful driving me everywhere in the old VW transporter. I really enjoyed it and would love to come back with a bunch of friends.

This was our first stay at Miss Ceylon and it was one of the best stays we’ve had! We have been to 5* hotels in Bali, Bangkok, Malaysia and Phuket and Miss Ceylon is one of the 5* hotels we are going to add to the list. It has such a trendy, bright, and vibrant feel. I absolutely loved the design of our villa, with the hotel pool right outside, as well as the beautiful shower and bathtub in a private outdoor space (part of our villa). On arrival, Udaya (the Manager) and Shamra greeted us with a smile and helped us to our Villa. The Villa was presented beautifully with decorations on the bed, and a wonderful refreshing coconut drink which was given to us. The hotel staff are VERY hospitable, kind, friendly, happy, and very helpful. They did EVERYTHING to make our stay memorable, warm and welcoming. The chef, Shamra, would ask what we would like for breakfast the next day, and we were given exactly what we had asked for. The breakfast table was presented beautifully, and on time. They knew our routine really well, and adjusted to it accordingly (breakfast, dinner and tea). Not to mention, they were always there to greet us, whether it was early mornings or late nights, and always checked to see if we needed anything. The travelling was made very easy, Sanju (hotel staff) was kind enough to drive us back and forth using his tuktuk, again, he was very hospitable and reliable. The stay at Miss Ceylon is one of the best we’ve experienced, and we are definitely going to book again!

This place has really bad customer service. we arrived at the property around 9:30pm. No one was at the property to receive us (even though we had called and advised we would be late check in). I was with my kids and they were tired after a long drive and at the gate, the security guard told us to go find another accommodation as this location will not be open until next day and the staff went home. He said there is no room ready and they were not expecting any guests. I had my reservation confirmation prepaid with Expedia. So please do not book this location if you’re travelling with family.

What a truly exceptional hotel. From the moment we arrived the staff were truly fantastic with our 3yr old daughter. In particular Udaya went above and beyond and nothing was too much trouble at all. Our only negative was that we didn’t stay here longer! If we return to Sri Lanka this will be hotel booking number1 for me and my family!
