A Hidden Gem -- Cornish Cottage with Private Shared Valley and Beach - REDUCTION

Quarryside is a Traditional Cornish stone cottage full of atmosphere and charm that has been a treasured home for four generations. The cottage is set in an outstanding, secluded location on the River Camel Estuary only 1.5 miles from the popular destination of Rock. A rustic farm track leads down to this peaceful and idyllic setting surrounded by fields with a wild garden and steps leading down to a valley which in turn leads onto a private shingle beach shared only with two neighbours. At low tide the beach looks onto the vast sandbanks of the estuary which attracts a large variety of birdlife.

Interior: The cosy interior is all on one level and consists of two bedrooms (one twin and one with bunk-beds), a small bathroom with shower over the bath, a traditional dining room and kitchen combining both original features with modern amenities. The bright sitting-room has a pretty bay window and a door leading through a small porch onto the west-facing patio outside.

Facilities: Heating is electric – night store or portable heaters.
The Kitchen has a traditional (Belling) electric oven and hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier.

Exterior: A west-facing patio with garden benches and a lawn with picnic bench surround the house. Outside the back door is a small yard for hanging washing, wetsuits, etc.

The area has easy access to the A30 plus the A39 and provides an excellent base for coastal walking along the North Cornwall footpath network; the famous golf-courses of St Enodoc and Trevose Golf & Country Club, with The Point Golf Course nearby at Polzeath; the popular Camel Estuary cycle trail linking Padstow with Wadebridge and Bodmin (as featured in The Times Best Cycle Rides with photograph of the private beach on the front page); several good family surfing beaches (Polzeath, Booby’s Bay, Constantine Bay and Watergate Bay), plus water sports such as sailing, canoeing, paddle-boarding and water-skiing on the Camel Estuary itself. Padstow opposite has good shops & restaurants, plus regular boat-rides out to the off-shore islands and sea-fishing trips. Cornwall also has many wonderful gardens within easy reach such as Heligan, Trebah, Trewithen, Lanhydrock and The Eden Project.

However, the tranquillity and proximity of the private garden valley and beach lend themselves to staying put in pursuit of home-based activities such as painting, reading, canoeing, beach-walking and generally exploring the estuary plus bird-life on your door-step.

Only 10 minute drive by car is Rock with very good bakery, butcher, fishmonger and delicatessen. Wadebridge and Bodmin have several Supermarkets for further supplies. Wadebridge also boasts a small cinema.

Miscellaneous
Arrival/Departure day is normally Saturday.
Electricity, heating and bed linen/towels all included.
The cottage provides a complete sanctuary with no telephone, television or Wifi -- but has good mobile coverage.

Strictly one well-behaved dog, please!

Beautiful Spot!
This is the second time we have stayed at Quarryside. It’s a beautiful cottage in an amazing location. The walk through the garden to the beach is gorgeous and we loved spotting all the different butterflies. The cottage is comfortable and has everything you need. Thank you for keeping it so traditional, please don’t ever change it!

Gentle Jane
I had a dream that she took my hand And led me to a far off land A path laid down a dewey hill Which opened on a land so still An ancestral plot so green and full It took my breath to see this jewel Plants and trees from around the earth Laid out and chosen for future mirth She sat me down in this fair glade And cherries, apples, plums she laid Between the white poplar and the cabbage tree We ate our fruits to the song of the sea As twilight fell she bid me come To sit beneath the Tasmanian blue gum We watched as the bats swooped down to feed Upon the wild cherries and the apple trees The tide was out so far in the estuary She led me deeper into the mystery It was as though we were upon the moon As we frolicked and ran over the dunes Though suddenly the darkness fell And it was as though she had cast a spell A deeper magic came in with the tide And I knew I had found my place to hide I waded back to the slate beach And Gentle Jane to me did teach A truth to which I now do need That nature is all we truly need.

Cosy and quiet stay in a family heirloom
We found the cottage a cosy and peacful place to stay. Its unusual in that it has been kept full of 90 years of family memorabilia, photos, books and nick nacks. Personally I loved this aspect and imagining all the accompanying stories but if you want a modern minimalist holiday home this isnt it. I felt a lot of effort had been made to keep the house clean which because of the age and amount of stuff must be difficult to maintain. There was a slight mustyness to some of the rooms but this wasnt a problem for us. Everyone had good 4G phone signal. We had some beautiful sunny evenings having BBQs, swimming and paddle boarding on the estuary, the lovely woods, wild garden and beach made this a very special place to stay.

Wonderful
Beautiful, comforable, bungalow. Like stepping into a cherished memory. A walk down the lush garden brings you to a slate beach on the camel estuary where we swam, baorded, skimmed, frisbeed, watched waterskiers, sat and watched sunsets and bats. There was even a resident oil beetle on top lawn. The most perfect May week away. Thank you 💙

Timeless magic
An Ode to Gentle Jane Coming down the lane My heart lurches in anticipation of the gain I shall feel in leaning into this place again Oh dear sweet Gentle Jane lure me into your quiet embrace again All life’s blames and pains Are washed away in the salty mane Of wise and Gentle Jane Oh dear sweet Gentle Jane lure me into your quiet embrace again I don’t deign to feign great pain But like most men I am vain and struggle to stay sane Here my woes are eased and tamed In the whispering of old pears, of plum trees and rain Oh dear sweet Gentle Jane lure me into your quiet embrace again In this garden, by these shores I light a fire and watch the moon wane I watch the moonscape emerge as the tide ebbs away with my shame A simplicity is bestowed upon me as I simply say her name Oh dear sweet Gentle Jane lure me into your quiet embrace again

Extremely Dirty. Left after 3 days. Not an experience we wish to repeat.
The musty smell hits you as you walk in the door and it only gets worse. Obvious signs of damp and the painting over of it can be seen in various places and this is clearly the reason for the smell. We left early because I developed a chest problem and we just couldn’t take the dirt and grime anymore. We thought we could manage this as we stayed away from the bungalow all day and only returned late at night to sleep, but we should have turned around the very first day and walked out. At least the bed linen seemed clean even if the beds and mattresses are very old and uncomfortable. The dirt is worst of all in the bathroom and kitchen and it really is appalling. I took photos hoping I could upload them with my review but that isn’t possible. Watch out for electrical shocks from the kettle too! The switch cover is missing which means it’s open to the touch and its lamp and electrical wires are exposed. Clearly a safety hazard. The cooker is at least 70 years old and the furniture is of a similar age and there isn‘t a comfortable seat in the house. In response to my informing the owner/property manager that we had vacated the property early she simply responded by saying ‘older properties in Cornwall can be a little musty.’ Really? So you knew? Then state that in your advertising so prospective guests also know that upfront and can make a rental decision based on that information! Overall an experience we have never been confronted with in over 40 years of traveling.

A very special place
The location is amazing. A beautiful garden walk takes you to your own beach - where you can sit and watch the tide, the birds, the water-skiers and the sunsets or swim and paddleboard in glorious isolation. If you feel like a bit more company you can walk along the beach to Rock at low tide and mingle at the various bars and restaurants. I went with friends and we had a wonderfully relaxing time. The house is small but full of character - the host has kept all the atmosphere of those who lived here before and you can feel the history of the place. I loved it and would return in a heartbeat.

An absolute gem
We had a wonderful stay. The cottage is an absolute gem. The peace and quiet is wonderful. The kitchen is well stocked and I loved the belling cooker. We ate in, played games, chatted and had such great family time. The beds were great, crisp linen. Towels fresh and clean. The property was clean, with plenty of hot water. Cleanliness is let down because of the carpet which smells of wee/mustiness/damp. Not the cleaners fault. It’s beyond reparation. Please rip out the sisal carpet it is so musty that we had to sleep with all windows and doors open so we could breath fresh air. Everything else, including customer care was perfect.

Quarryside is such a beautiful, warm and relaxing home it is almost as if the cottage gives you a hug. We cannot recommend it highly enough for a proper break away from it all. The location is simply second to none and we enjoyed endless walks along the beach to Rock. Beautiful.

Charming location
Pluses and minuses to this property I our view. Positives : good location near village, quiet and rural, really lovely valley garden to shared private beach on the estuary, camp fire on the beach, sensible price for the week, good owner communication. Negatives: to be honest the property is ready for some modernisation, back bed room has a damp issue (it was August so we could open the windows), just too much furniture and general stuff, too many family photos for our taste (though be fair some guests comment that is a charming thing). So pluses and minuses in our view. Clearly many customers like it a lot based on the visitor book. If it were my house I'd spend a load of money on it and put the weekly rate up - but hey that's not what everyone wants. Best rgds

We felt very welcome, soothed and taken care of by this warm family home - the house, gardens and private access to the estuary combine to make a magical place of childhood stories and adventures - and we got to write our own chapter. Thank you!

Fantastic position and area of property, quiet and so peaceful, a real getaway.
The property (contents ) could really do with some updating. It was like walking back in time to the 1930’s, the kettle and toaster were the only modern appliances, we ate out every evening so I didn’t have to use the old Belling cooker. Bedding was spotless and crisp white. Lovely walks and beach perfect, no TV or WiFi the 4G was pretty useless

Lovely old cottage in idyllic setting!
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Quarryside and was very glad I decided to book. If you're looking for a break away from the city and fast-paced modern life, it's the perfect escape and like stepping back in time. The setting is magical, with a beautiful valley garden brimming with fruit trees leading onto your own sheltered beach. The views of the estuary are stunning and the beach is perfect for kayaking or paddle boarding & lovely as a start/end point for coastal walks when the tide is out. The cottage itself is a real treasure, so welcoming and peaceful, with all its old world charm and rich personal history. There is also a little dining room, which isn't shown in the photos. It's lovely and secluded and definitely off the beaten track but without feeling isolated, as there is a large house right behind and another house/ cottage at the end of the lane. Beds were comfortable, linen was fresh and although the cottage is very old and dated in many ways it was also very cosy and equipped with everything you might need. I would love to stay again.

Complete tranquility!
Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, this idyllic property will transport you back to a time when mobile phones and laptops were not even a jot on a pad! If you are looking to relax unwind and enjoy your surroundings you cannot get much better than Quarryside. I spent 10 days here and I can honestly say it's a wonderful location, off the beaten track but close by to Rock and Polzeath so you can go off and eat out, surf etc. The private beach was incredible. Paddleboarded each day (tide times). Really something different - you won't be disappointed if you book Quarryside, but you'll miss it as soon as you leave.
