Vernooy-Bevier Historical Stone House

Recently placed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the Vernooy-Bevier home and farmstead is a true rarity. Sitting in the middle of almost 9 bucolic acres is one of the oldest homes in the NY State. Countless hours of historical research has dated the house between 1690-1710. It is only one of two homes in Wawarsing to survive the Revolutionary war. This uniquely intact home and landscape represents hundreds of years of farming and homesteading. The Old Stone home has been well cared for over it's long history and is a cozy and inviting space. Two enormous fireplaces grace the living and kitchen areas and period details are evident throughout. Once outside you will find yourself immersed in the sheer beauty of the property. Sprawling over well maintained grounds are 6 additional structures, mature trees, small apple and cherry trees orchard, shaded stone patio with the ultimate outdoor fireplace. The massive stone fireplace was part of a summer kitchen that was said to have been burned during an indian raid. Additional buildings (1800's constructions) consist of the cavernous main barn, Ice House, the Granary, the Machine Barn, the Hog Barn. Currently the living room is uninhabitable as reconditioning of the original 18 century floors is being performed. Pictures are from the main room/ kitchen on the first floor and the two bedrooms and hallway on the second floor. There is a full bathroom on the second floor and a half bathroom on the first floor. The TV is being hidden by the screen in the master bedroom. Walk-in closets in the main and guest bedrooms are not usable.

The property sprawls for 9 acres out of which 6 acres constitute an organic farm (including an orchard). Vernooy Kill is at the back of the property along with ATV trails leading to Awosting lake.

House is furnished with antique furniture which mostly date to 1800s or earlier with some pieces of furniture from early 1900s. Plates adorning the walls are mainly delft with some Chinese and Japanese blue plates.

It was interesting and a beautiful location
We loved the location and found the decor interesting. More written material would of helped. The Mosquitos were pretty thick- we treat our yard, so we felt swarmed just stepping outside. Fortunately, our dogs are treated. It felt inviting- except for all the personal toiletries that were in the bathroom. And the bathtub was not cleaned. We rested well; however, and were very happy to have our furry friends with us- that was extremely important to us.

Historical experience.
We loved our stay. It was quite impressive to learn so much about the history of that house. We were in awe of its age and endurance. The house stay was as advertised. I’ve stayed in many houses in the area and this one is just as good. My only concern was with the outside area. We had to do some cleaning and arranging around the stoned area.

Charming colonial cottage
This was a lovely historic cottage near Minnewaska Preserve (where we went hiking). The property is super cool with lots of barns to explore. Part of the house is still under renovation and when it is done, it will be stunning. The bedrooms were great and we appreciated that it was a little more modern upstairs. One king bed and one full so I think it really just sleeps 3. There were old house quirks but that was part of the charm. I think we might be one of the first guests and, with a few improvements, it will be really great. Note: We were glad to bring our dog but the resident cat was not thrilled about it and we had to watch them. I also think this is not a great property for families with young children. There are many breakable things and some dangerous tools lying about. You'd have to supervise very carefully which wouldn't be super relaxing. There was also no microwave.
