Highland Cottage: Nestled Between the Atlantic Coast and the White Mountains

Highland Cottage
Nestled Between the Atlantic Ocean and White Mountains. Still, WiFi Internet Service is available at Highland Cottage.

Picturesquely situated in the highlands overlooking the Saco and Ossipee River Valleys, this cottage offers a phenomenal mountain view with rolling hills and open fields. The winding country road, bordered by long stretches of stonewalls, provides a partial panorama of the foothills of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. A three-minute stroll brings one to an impressive overlook.

Highland Cottage is located one-half mile off the Pequawket Trail (Route 113), a Maine Scenic Byway. It is a two-story structure with lovely woodwork and is attractively decorated; the artistically-designed stairway is accentuated by morning sunlight. There are two bedrooms: one with a full-size bed, the other with a set of twin beds. The living room has a futon that opens to a full-size bed. Thus the cottage sleeps six. An eat-in kitchen with special country charm seats six diners. There is one bathroom with a shower as well as a washer and dryer laundry center.

The kitchen has a microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot, and full-size cook stove as well as a dishwasher. Pots, pans, dinnerware, and utensils are provided.

In addition…
• A screened-in porch with table and chairs
• A TV and DVD player (no cable)
• A CD player
• Small library collection, including general interest books, cookbooks
• Games and puzzles
• Portable electric fireplace and electric heat
• Stainless steel BBQ grille
• Washer and dryer

This cottage is very clean, comfortable and well equipped. I stayed there for 4 nights while attending a music camp in the area. It was a great place to unwind after a busy day; quiet and peaceful, and I slept great. I want to come back next year for a longer stay.

This basic, peaceful cottage is located off the beaten track, yet within driving distance of conveniences and services. It's compact but comfortable; some fixtures are older, but everything works fine. Jerry thoughtfully provided a few extra things he knew we'd need. We enjoyed day trips to a number of scenic destinations and would recommend this place for a couple or small family.

This rental transported us to visits to grandparents’s…easy to make yourself at home, practical, curios stashed in corners, a little smelly. The checkin process was straightforward. Gerry stopped by to work on something in the garage during our stay.

We rented Highland Cottage from June through October 2022. It is a lovely spot, nestled on the edge of a forest and on property that houses an amazing 1794 Farmhouse. The cottage is tucked away on a winding country road with views to the foothills of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Deer seen often and in the fall.....lots of wild turkeys....a peaceful retreat. Located next door to the Lake Country of Maine, the area has abundant access to water for swimming, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, etc. Beautiful hiking trails are abundant. There is quick and easy access to main roads and highways that lead to all the treasures of a New England visit. Bernadette and Gerry are the Best Hosts ever! Attentive and super quick communicators, they are truly gracious hosts. They attend to any need(s) immediately, yet are so respectful of guests' privacy needs. My husband and I really can't give enough accolades to them! Wonderful people....you won't meet better! The place was super clean, neat and welcoming. Enjoy a special visit here! Thank you, Bernadette and Gerry!

Our visit of 18 days was outstanding in every respect. The cottage is conveniently located near Cornish, ME which is handy for food shopping, drug stores and good restaurants. We used the cottage as a base for wide-ranging side trips to Kennebunkport, the Freyburg Fair, Freeport (for L. L. Bean), Windham, and North Conway, NH, the gateway to the White Mountains, among other places of interest. Our dog was welcome and we arrived at the height of the fall foliage season. The trees were magnificent and the views as we drove about were spectacular. The cottage is well appointed with a fully equipped kitchen with a large refrigerator, gas stove, a microwave, toaster oven and a full complement of pots, pans and utensils. It has a delightful propane fireplace handy for cool nights, and (wonder of wonders for a vacation rental) a full size washer and dryer. It was in "move in" condition. All we needed were groceries. The radio/CD player was welcome as was the color TV which received the two stations available very well. There are handy electrical sockets throughout. This is a laid-back vacation experience. Don't expect WiFi. We solved that problem by accessing hot spots at local libraries and the nearby University of Southern Maine library when we absolutely had to have access. Our hosts, Bernie and Gerry, were very available to answer questions or make suggestions for local places to see or things to do. This had to be one of our most relaxing and pleasant vacation experiences. We recommend this vacation rental very highly. We would love to come back.

The hosts were very accommodating and even allowed us to bring our dogs (which were kenneled in the house when we were sight seeing). Perfect road for long walks with gorgeous views. Close to other quaint Maine towns for exploration. I highly recommend Highland Cottage and plan to return next spring/summer.

This is my second stay at this vacation rental and once again I was very happy with what it offered. The area is so peaceful and if you stand in just the right spot in the front yard you get a beautiful view of the mountains. The week was very hot but we were very comfortable sleeping with the air conditioner. It is also great to have a washer/dryer combo so there is no need to go to the laundromat. I come to Maine almost every year to visit friends and enjoy the beauty Maine has to offer and this is the perfect place for doing just that. I highly recommend Highland Cottage for anyone looking for a quiet picturesque location but still being close enough to visit many of the popular attractions.

In mid August, 2014, we rented Highland Cottage when Bernadette and Gerry rented on a monthly basis, rather than a weekly or daily basis. What most impressed us was the beauty of the area, especially the stone walls hills, and mountain views. Lots of nice back roads for walking! The exterior of the cottage was inviting; the gardens were nicely kept; the lawns were well-maintained. The inside was nearly spotless. The location really was ideal. I hate heights but I still managed to look over the railing of the stone tower on Douglass Mountain. Because of my fear of heights, we did not even inquire about the road to the top of Mount Washington in NH (probably still snow-covered). We loved shopping in the Old Port section of Portland. I purchased a carved wooden dog that hangs in my gazebo in SC today. Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth was great. Old Orchard Beach was fun, with the amusement park and tons of shops and great food to taste! North Conway, NH is a shopper's dream; we purchased nice gifts for the family and sports clothing for the grandchildren. The Nike Outlet Store there is excellent; my daughter works for Nike in SC. Back at the cottage we had just about everything that we needed, other than enough large pots for cooking. We had family meeting us, so extra pots were needed. Since Bernadette said to call if we needed anything, we did. She brought us two additional pots (with covers) within the hour. The washer and dryer worked fine but were older. We do highly recommend Highland Cottage and will be booking a stay again in May 2016. When I talked to Bernadette and Gerry, they said that a new laundry center had just been delivered and installed. Oh, and I must mention that when we stayed at Highland Cottage we had our dogs with us. Peanut--a geriatric Chihuahua with health concerns--was in tow. Pepper, a younger dog, was insulin dependent. Bernadette gave us a listing of local animal hospitals and 24-hour emergency centers. With 18 years of animals rescue experience, she helped us feel comfortable about staying in a rural setting with special needs pets. She even offered to take care of them while we took a couple day trips. Definitely a great spot and kindhearted people who live in close proximity.
