The deserted village is the most famous, and arguably most important, Medieval village to have been discovered. It helped to answer a lot of questions. The site is laid out in a series of earthworks which tell the story of the original inhabitants. There are also some more modern, 18th Century buildings - like the church pictured, which show how the site progressed. Be sure to download the free audio guide from the English Heritage website, and wear sensible shoes; the trek down to and around the village is not for the faint hearted.
