Antibes Juan Les Pins, a harmonious blend of traditions and modernity. The apartment is very close to the Castle of Juan Les Pins and a pretty park. In 1888, Claude Monet traveled to Antibes Juan Les Pins, met Maupassant, whom he already knew, and settled for a time at the Château de Juan Les Pins. He wants to paint the dewy light of the landscape, but he is stopped in his tracks by the vagaries of the weather which prevent him from finishing a canvas begun. The great history of jazz begins in July 1960. It is in Antibes that Sydney Bechet composes some of her famous melodies, like "Little flower", "onions", "In the streets of Antibes". Ray Charles and Miles Davis made their European debut in the Gould pine forest. (Alley of footprints.)
If you want to enjoy the pleasures of the beach, the apartment is very close to the sea and will meet all your expectations. Dolce idleness or active holidays (paddle, etc.) At the end of the 19th century, Juan Les Pins was nothing but a pine forest and beautiful sandy beaches, which later saw the birth of water skiing. Its development began at the beginning of the XXth century, the beginning of the Roaring Twenties or the frenzy of living around 1930, with Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald. They were staying at the Hotel Belles-Rives which has kept the furniture from those years. At that time, it was rather winter tourism coveted by a few wealthy families anxious to flee the cold weather. Mr. Franck Jay Gould wants to invest in France, he settles in Juan Les Pins and arranges the pine forest, building in 1926 the Hotel Le Provençal (290 rooms) built in an art deco style, one of the great palaces of the Côte d 'Azure. He created the first summer casino and also invested in gastronomy. He died in Juan Les Pins. Port Gallice and the bay of Juan Les Pins. Lots of beautiful villas that belonged to stars of the time, such as Rudolf Valentino, Villa Warner ... Pass in front of the Olivette shelter, where the typical boats of the region are anchored: the pointed ones.
Our region is rich in history. Antibes, its Greek origins, then the Roman era, many vestiges witness of all these centuries, treasures to discover ... (Archeology museum) .. Until 1860, Antibes was a border town, the fortifications, the walls of Vauban, the Fort Carré, the Graillon battery ... testify to this past. From this date, and the attachment of the County of Nice to France, Antibes and Cap d'Antibes will particularly develop their tourism with the English and the Russians thereafter.
Cap d'Antibes: Around 1880, Mr. André Sella will buy, modernize little by little the Hotel du Cap Eden Roc and develop this little Paradise on 9Ha. One of the most beautiful palaces in the world, an elegant establishment, which housed artists and writers, then the great European aristocracy, and currently all the celebrities of the Seventh Art, particularly at the time of the Cannes Festival. Sumptuous residences, vast parks, pines, eucalyptus, various species of palm trees, cypresses, magnolias, olive trees ... and depending on the season, mimosas, roses, buttercups, jasmine, pythos, laurels ... bloom in turn in gardens, trails ... And also vegetation specific to the Mediterranean, aloe, prickly pear, sagebrush ... Lots of protected plants. Imposing steep rocks, walls of the Garoupe and Croë castles If you have time, go for a walk on the Cap d'Antibes trails, the Smugglers' Trail for example, or along the ramparts of Vieil Antibes. (Bring a pair of good shoes.) To see the villa Eilenroc with an exotic botanical park, symbol of luxury and voluptuousness of the Belle Epoque, created by Charles Garnier, architect of the operas of Paris and Monte Carlo. The Villa Thuret, property of INRA, the botanical park is marked, the remarkable garden: rose garden, olive grove The lighthouse and the Chapel of La Garoupe, an exceptional view over Nice and from the other towards the Lérins Islands and Cannes. Visit the old town of Antibes, its Provencal market. If you like sacred music, come to the Festival of Sacred Art, each year in September, (Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Handel ...) The Picasso Museum in Antibes, the Peynet Museum, the Postcard Museum: a charming, passionate and fascinating gentleman will explain the history of the postcard from its origins to the present day. (About 2 hours.) If you like pretty yachts, don't miss a visit to the Quai des Milliardaires. Roman Abramovitch, Russian oligarch, owner of the Chelsea football club owns the Château de la Croë in Cap d'Antibes. Two of his luxury yachts anchor regularly in the Bay of Juan.
And also the Maeght Foundation in St Paul de Vence .. and the city itself. The discovery of the Perfumes of Grasse and their know-how recognized throughout the world. Biot glassware Take a boat trip to the Lérins Islands (Ste Marguerite or St Honorat Island) Further on, the Calanques de l'Estérel. Go golfing at Cannes Mandelieu, Cannes Mougins, or further on at Tourettes, at Terres Blanches ... Finally, there is Antibes, the largest marine park in Europe with killer whale and dolphin shows. There are lots of nice little restaurants to discover. I will still speak of Michelangelo, at Mamo Letti, a very good Italian restaurant where you can both enjoy and, sometimes, rub shoulders with celebrities of the Seventh Art, of all nationalities.
Some painters: Pablo Picasso, honorary citizen of the city of Antibes, donated 245 of his works to the Museum that bears his name. Nicolas De Staël spent the last years of his life in Antibes. Some of his works evoke Antibes at the Picasso Museum. and Claude Monet, Marc Chagall, Paul Signac, Henri Zuber, Raymond Peynet (Musée Peynet) ..
Many writers have written about this beautiful region: Victor Hugo praised Antibes ..... Here everything radiates, flowers and sings ... "We fall in love with Antibes, its climate, its alleys, its atmosphere and all its diversities which make it the most enchanting stay," according to Anatole France "Aqui sian Ben", here we feel good. George Sand stops in Antibes and is enthusiastic about the view of Cap d'Antibes. Ernst Jünger, disciple of Nietzsche, nicknamed Le Méridional, had the impression that it was his native land. Kessel, Audiberti, Guy De Maupassant (Mont Oriol), Prévert, Eluard, Aragon, Roger Martin Du Gard, Paul Arène (Tales and short stories from Provence, the canoe of the 6 captains ...) have written a lot about this region. Scott Fitzgerald "Tender is the night" The Hôtel Provençal (Juan Les Pins) was the setting for the novel "Honeymoon" by Patrick Modiano. Jules Verne would have written "Around the world in 80 days" in his villa "The green oaks" at Cap d'Antibes. Graham Greene ("Can you lend us your husband," "The Comedians", "Travel with my aunt") lived a long time on rue Pasteur in Antibes. William Somerset Maugham, British playwright and novelist, spoke about Antibes in his short story with incisive humor: "Les 3 grosses dames d'Antibes"
I will end with the last part of a poem:
.... If eighty days ... of travel, take you to our land, Stop, Pécaïre, Jules Verne did it right! Come and take a walk under the hackberries And drink the pastis, at the port, under the shade In Antibes, time lingers better than elsewhere, Music and poetry, here, are in the spotlight And we will treat you with very small onions, It will be necessary to return so much it is good there! Come on, come see us. No one is disappointed! I'm talking to you about those who have already come .. So welcome! (Antibes; secrets under the pebbles.)
