We booked this property a few weeks prior to travel. When our day of check-in arrived, Avery County had a state of emergency declared and put out a number of DO NOT TRAVEL notices due to the pending historic ice storm forecasted and likelihood of power loss. The notices from the city and mountain area even threatened "if you get stuck, don't expect help." The host confirmed the property does not have a generator as well. We know of three other VRBO rentals in the area where the host actively reached out and requested to cancel for the safety of the travelers. Not this host however. This host fought through and opted to try to rely on a state of emergency and do not travel requests from local government to not meet VRBO's extenuating circumstances policy. I spoke with an agent at VRBO and forwarded evidence of the weather and do not travel notices in the area. The agent agreed to refund VRBO's fees and seemed shocked that the host fought the cancelation. I'm still pursuing remedies with VRBO, the credit card company and if all else fails, small claims court. To give the host the benefit of the doubt here, I got the impression that the agency they use for management refused to reach out to the host for input and would not put me in contact with the host directly. Probably advisable to switch management agencies to one with more competence.I'll rate the cleanliness a 5 of 5 because the host didn't even bother to offer a refund for the cleaning fee.
