Cozy, Lakefront Log Cabin

Welcome to Hobo Haven! Hobo Haven, our family-built home named after our beloved dog Hobo, is a charming log cabin located on two acres on Lake Gaston in Bracey, Virginia. Our three story, three bedroom, three bath home is a classic log cabin, featuring plank hard wood floors, wood beam ceilings, and, of course, beautiful hand-hewn log walls.

Our home boasts three covered and one uncovered decks, all with beautiful views of the lake. It also features a large screened-in porch, perfect for eating lunch on a warm summer day. These covered outside spaces allow you to enjoy the outdoors even in the case of bad weather. The fully equipped, open concept kitchen is ideal for preparing any meal, and features a dining room table with seating for ten, perfect for a lovely family dinner. Even on a cool autumn or winter day, cozy up next to one of two beautiful stone fireplaces, one located in the kitchen, the other in the second story family room area. Despite being a rustic log cabin, Hobo Haven still has standard modern luxuries we’ve come to expect, including three 32-inch and two 50-inch flat screen TVs, cable, telephone, air conditioning, and heat.

Bedroom/sleeping Details:
* Bedroom One- Master (Second Floor)—1 Queen bed, with access to outside covered deck and bathroom.
* Bedroom Two—(Third Floor)—1 Queen bed, one twin bed
* Bedroom Three—(Third Floor)—1 Queen bed, 1 toddler bed, 1 crib, with direct access to bathroom
* One queen pull out on second floor living space
* Two twin bunk beds on second floor living space nook with curtains for privacy
* One high quality, queen, blowup mattress is included. There is plenty of floor space available, if you’d like to bring additional air mattresses.
* Convertible couch on bottom level that can be used as additional sleeping space for 2 adults
* Full couch on second floor living space

Public boat launch is minutes away, both driving and by water, at the Holly Grove Marina. A huge sun deck above the lifts provides amazing, panoramic water views and great sunning opportunities. Water depth off the dock is about 14 feet, plenty deep for diving, swimming, floating and fishing. Water depth at the steps going into the water is between 3-4 feet deep, making it easy for children and pets to get in and out of the water. Please keep in mind, this rental does not include a boat. Boat rentals are available on the lake.

Nice quiet neighborhood. Great cove spot on the lake caught plenty of fish off the dock. Paddle boards and kayak were nice to use. House was ok very big and spacious plenty of areas to hangout and play games or just sit and chill. Fire pit area is new and very nice. When we first arrived we had to sweep and remove cobwebs from windows. Back yard is under construction so I would say not good for kids or older people until it is fixed. Everyone slipped down the hill of rocks at some point in our stay. 3rd floor front bedroom bed was noisy and not comfortable for me and the Window ac units could use a cleaning also.

We all enjoyed our stay and wish we could live there year round. What an amazing vacation for a family with teenagers and kids in college. There was plenty of room to sprawl out and so many great books for family time! It really is a neat home full of character. The cove is quiet and safe and full of fun! My favorite morning routine was to paddle board and kayak to visit the herons before the rest of the house woke up to play! Owners were kind with any questions and seemed great! We will definitely be back!

This was the equivalent of a close family member giving you the keys to their lake home. It's not a hotel -- you're on your own to maintain cleanliness while you stay there - but you're free to use anything they have on offer. We stayed for six days, cooking huge family dinners, sitting out at the fire bowl, napping in our respective corners, enjoying time on the covered decks and watching the wildlife in and around the lake. The owners were ultra-communicative -- very responsive but not intrusive - before, during, and after our stay. The home is gorgeous; the photos of it and the surrounding property do not do it adequate justice. If you're a home cook, you can make just about anything if you are resourceful. We made lasagna, breakfast casseroles, and even beef Wellington! Wi-fi signal was good and strong, as some of us had to handle some work emergencies and did so with no issues. Indoor heat was not an issue at all, but you have to follow the excellent directions given by the owners. We were very cozy during our stay when nights could be very cold but days could be anything from sunny and warm to rainy, chilly and damp. Plenty of clean and cozy throw blankets to drape on your lap while watching TV or reading a book. We were accompanied by our clean, well-behaved large-breed dogs, and they loved the property as well. These owners are kind, good, and generous folks. It was a privilege to spend our family holiday at their home. The memories will last a lifetime.

Nice location on cove of lake. Lots of living and sleeping space. Is a log cabin, so dark inside and only window air conditioning, so can be a little warm. Outside needs some TLC, upper boathouse deck needs some work. Relaxing place!

We love this place! It's perfect for our family! And pet friendly too! Near our favorite fishing spots! Caught quite a few crappie off the dock too. We spent most of our time on the dock, fishing , swimming and relaxing when we were not out on our boat fishing! Our grandkids love it! One of our favorite places to stay! It's a little piece of country but on the lake! The screened in room off the cabin was a perfect place to hang out on a rainy day when we couldn't get down to the dock.

This beautiful log cabin home on Lake Gaston was the perfect place for our family to gather for Christmas. Such warmth and character. The kitchen had everything we needed for some delicious cooking over the course of several days. We brought our own Christmas tree, along with some simple Christmas decorations, that really made it feel like home! The weather was warm enough for us to be able to be outside and gather with a fire every night. We fished for some catfish off the dock, and got a massive big blue catfish on Christmas morning! We will book again in the summer months when we can access the lake with a boat and kayaks!

Loved the location - was very peaceful and great to take kayaks out. Doors were hard to open/secure and some to upstairs decks wouldn’t open. Would have loved the outside string lights but many were out/broken. Loved sitting on first level porch with rope swings and enjoying the lake - easy access to dock.

Beautiful lake front property with a large yard and easy access to the lake. The owner did a wonderful job decorating for Christmas including a beautiful tree. It was a great Christmas weekend. Our only issue was the cold weather, 10 degrees in the mornings. You can't stop nature. The house was cold inside in the main living areas. We still had a great time.

This place is amazing. The pictures don't do the view and outdoor space justice!! This was hands down the best place we've stayed at the lake thus far. The location was perfect because it was off of the main lake (high traffic/wake) but didn't make you feel like you were in a teeny tiny cove either. We rented jet skis for our kids and felt so at ease letting them ride in the area due to its location (also good/safe for tubing). The neighborhood is quiet and relaxing. The lot/yard was perfect for having our dog with us. We never felt right on top of the neighbors/other dogs and the lot is mostly all fenced in! The window AC units cooled the house down just fine (we were nervous about this), but we were rarely inside :) If bringing or renting a boat (we did both) there is an extremely convenient location to put in the water and get gas at Holly Grove Marina. Just know there is a bridge you must go through that is very narrow! (Yes a pontoon will fit!) We were so very sad to go and we will be coming back again <3

We were return guests at Hobo Haven. This year we stayed 10 days instead of 7 which was perfect and we hope to do this again. Plenty of room for 7 of us and our two dogs. The dogs love the big yard and easy access to the lake for swimming. Kids enjoyed the addition of the small ping pong/air hockey table. A little disappointed in the paddle boat. Had a difficult time trying to maneuver it. Also wasn't able to get the gas grill working. Went exploring a little more this year and found the winery and convenience food store with the great bakery. Some discrepancies between the check out information printed at the cottage the e- mail I received. Not sure if towels and sheets still need laundered before we leave. Did it any way. Noticed some small organizational changes in the kitchen which seemed to allow more counter space which was great. Overall, had a great vacation at this beautiful lake house and plan to return!

Our family absolutely loves this house for so many reasons. The property is pet friendly, and almost completely fenced in which is a huge plus. We comfortably had 6 couples in the bedrooms, and 4 teens on the middle floor - there are bunk beds there and plenty of room to set up two air mattresses for them to spread out and have their space. We enjoyed eating out on the screened in porch when the occasional rainstorm would crop up, but primarily we were on the dock all day! The water is nice and deep, so jumping off either of the docks was fun and safe. Everyone really enjoyed using the paddle boards and kayak, and floating on the giant mat was very relaxing. Even though we had a few issues upon check in, the owners are ALWAYS responsive and make it right to the best of their ability - we so appreciated their care. I do love that there is everything you need for your stay. There are trash bags, hand soap, dish washing soap, etc., and all the necessary kitchen items available. I always pack these things when I travel, but this home is well stocked. The only recommendation I would make is to get a new mattress for the sleeper sofa, as the one that is on there is not able to be slept on. No doubt we will be coming back for a 3rd visit next summer as this place just has it all. Thank you all so much for another awesome family vacation!

Overall the property was great, our group of 7 kids, and 8 adults had a great time. We loved the 2 paddle boards, canoe, and the kayak. They also had a large variety of life jackets and pool toys to play in the lake with. We spent our whole stay swimming and fishing. Note that there is no central air conditioning, however, it was 95 degrees and humid outside and the window units in the house were more than sufficient to cool the house, even in those temperatures. They were renovating the deck above the screen room during our stay so we did have a couple of contractors at the house one day but they did not interfere with our vacation and we were informed by the property manager before they arrived. We only gave 3 stars for cleanliness due to the 3rd floor bathroom needing some attention however I believe this was just an oversight because they rest of the house was clean and comfortable. Watch out for snakes (not a huge issue as you are outside in their environment we just were not expecting to find 2 copperheads after dark while we were night fishing). The only thing we were missing in the kitchen was a toaster. We had dogs with us and enjoyed the yard being mostly fenced as this made it much easier to keep the dogs contained and the double lot was great as we had plenty of outdoor space. We all much enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay in this beautiful rustic log home again.

Nice property. Paddleboards were super fun. Note if you have a boat with any sort of top, you won’t be able to get under the bridge to the main lake. There was also broken furniture at the dock that took up half the space. And lots of left-over, outdated food in the refrigerator. BUYER BEWARE: If you plan on renting this property, be prepared to invest the time after to work with VRBO to get your $200 refundable damage deposit back. We have never had a deposit withheld in our lives so we were definitely caught by surprise. Before we arrived we had agreed with the owner to pay the $75 linen fee rather than washing and drying all the sheets and towels before check-out. This $75 fee is also mentioned in their rental contract. There were no specifications in the contract on how the linens should be left. We expected to receive the remaining $125 from our deposit but they refused to return any of our deposit due to the linens, pistachio nuts, water bottles and food left in the microwave. Nobody in our party had any nuts on the premise during our stay. We hauled 8 loads of recycling and trash from the premise for a 4-night stay. No water bottles were left behind. It is possible that maybe a pancake was left in the microwave by accident but we are unsure given the other false claims made. Regardless we already paid a $75 cleaning fee and a $79 fee for damage insurance that would cover everything mentioned. The owners refused to refund our money so we had to work with the VRBO to get it back. We were refunded the entire $200 deposit with the help of their customer service. We really thought they had gotten us confused with another renter given the accusations that did not make sense but they said their prized cleaner and personal family friend of 6+ years never gets it wrong and takes detailed notes. I’m sorry but no good cleaner would leave spatulas like the ones we found on arrival the clean utensil holder sitting in the middle of the counter by the sink in plain view. They were caked with old food. Obviously never washed. I wish I could figure out how to attach the pictures. I've never rented anywhere that had such dirty dishes. We had to wash all cups and dishes before using them.
