Such a cool little mission up in the hills. The drive is beautiful and remember to take a small container so you can take some "magic healing dirt" with you for the road. This place really does seem to heal people and my kids have kept the "magic dirt" handy since we got home to sleep with whenever anything hurts or they have a cold.

Many visitors to the church take a small amount of the "holy dirt", often in hopes of a miraculous cure for themselves or someone who could not make the trip. The dirt, found in the room known as "pocito" (well) is considered holy because in this spot the crucifix of Our Lord of Esquipulas was found by Bernardo Abeyta in 1810. Since then thousands of pilgrims and visitors have come to El Santuario de Chimayo searching for spiritual, emotional and physical healing. No pictures are allowed inside the Sanctuary.
I visited the Sanctuary during Holy Week, unbeknownst to me, over 30,000 people make pilgrimage to this church. The tradition is to walk to the church and I saw many people along the highway and roads heading towards the church.
