The definition of this is a close and long term interaction between different biological species, which is mutually beneficial to both. The fungus does its bit by retaining water which protects the alga, which can only live in wet conditions. The alga is photosynthetic, meaning, like a plant, it can turn carbon dioxide in to sugars, which feeds both the alga and the fungus.

I spent a whole day just on this beach on the Isle of Eigg. It is truly a geology and a photography paradise. We were lucky to have a day full of sun and times shade that highlighted the landscape and it's incredible features. You can get here via a ferry from Mallaig and can rent a bike from the port or take a good hike across the Isle.
