The first impression was good on entering the hotel. The lift however is insufficient in size especially with many guests as was case when I stayed. This caused problems at breakfast time. The single room was smaller than expected. Reception staff V Good. Limited seating in comfortable Piano Bar area. There were 2 coach trips in every day of my stay. Ideal position for Public transport.

Welcoming staff, Room was very comfortable and housekeeping was excellent room made up to a high standard every day of stay. Breakfast was very good ate in restaurant 2 nights of stay food was really nice. Excellent location on seafront near electric tram and steam railway To sum up we all have enjoyed our stay at the Empress hotel

Walls are paper thin. Heard everything going on above and to the sides from my neighbors. Shower was stuck at the hottest 35°. Too cold. Bed was uncomfortable. Restaurant and bar was good tho. Not sure i'll ever stay here again but will def visit the bar and restaurant. Cleaning staff was on point.

The Empress Hotel is very well known and well liked, it seems. The restaurant has an excellent menu. We preferred the restaurant menu because the canned tiny shrimp in the Prawn Marie Rose stuffed Jacket in the Bar was not appealing at all. Now, let me tell you about our pitiful, proletarian room, up and down narrow stairs, plus the elevator to help with luggage. It was NOT what we booked, it was plain, no decorative elements, a window that looked out on an alleyway with ugly equipment, plus a metal ledge and ladder. We couldn’t even see the sky! Seeing the age and mobility of most of the clients the bathroom tub in this room would be very dangerous because the height of the sides and the slippery bottom. If you book this hotel do NOT accept to be put in room 603!! TELL THEM AT RECEPTION THAT YOU WILL NOT STAY IN THAT ROOM.

Receptionist on check in was not friendly and did not explain where breakfast was held, breakfast times, if I wanted dinner reservations etc. It was all robotic - sign here and basically give me your payment. So as a first impression from a long journey not great. Room had suitable amenities. Kettle, biscuits, hairdrier. Shower very powerful. Bed comfy. Breakfast good selection. Staff friendly and efficient in the breakfast area. Hotel clean.
