Long Hollow Scenic Overlook provides a nice driving break just off of Hwy 20. Beautiful rolling hills make up the Northwest Illinois countryside just east of Galena.
I found this large black rat snake sunning on a rock in the hill prairie so I placed it on a tree stump for a few photos. These are very gentle mild mannered snakes that grow to lengths of 6 feet or more.
Another shot of a male Indigo Bunting eyeballing a couple of tasty insects. I probably spent 3 hours waiting for these males to land in the flowers so I could get some shots that showed off the amazing colors.
