Koivu Koti: Houghton “birch house” near trails/MTU

This is a perfect place for vacation in the UP and is centrally located in Houghton making it very convenient to enjoy this fabulous town and its surrounding areas. It is situated about 1 mile from the MTU recreational trails where you can cross country ski on world class trails, snowshoe, mountain bike, hike, and run! Michigan Tech University is less than a mile as well as historic downtown Houghton.

This spacious home has a full kitchen stocked with dishes, utensils, pots and pans, baking utensils, stove, coffee pot -- everything you need to cook all meals. There are three bedrooms in the house. Two bedrooms have queen beds and the third bedroom has two twin bed. The upstairs living space is very large and has a sectional sofa as well as a daybed, 2 twin beds, and TV. The sectional sofa pulls out into a full size bed with a comfortable pillow top that can sleep up to 2. The day bed pulls out into either 2 twin beds or 1 king size bed and can sleep up to 2. We also have two twin beds in addition. For a total of 5 beds in the upstairs living space. The TV access includes Netflix as well as Amazon prime.

This is a wonderful home for families, friends, and the adventurers looking for a cozy, clean place to stay while feeling at home. Located within reach of all Houghton has to offer and a central hub for Keweenaw exploration - you can't go wrong!

Self check-in and check-out make guests stay one step easier. Late night checking in is not a problem. Guests have full access to their half of the town house and the other side is bookable for bigger parties, please ask if you are interested!

Great Place To Stay With a Family

This property worked out perfectly as a jumping point to explore the surrounding area. It's located within walking distance to downtown Houghton and the setup is very compatible with having children.

Beautifully renovated older home! Unfortunately the area we rented was up a flight of stairs and the gathering space was up another flight of stairs away from the bedrooms and kitchen. Looks like this property can be divided into smaller rentals or the entire house. We rented just a part of the house. If you rent the entire house there would be gathering on the main level.

We stayed for one night after skiing Mt Bohemia. House was a great location, perfect for what we needed. Didn’t use the kitchen really except for coffee, but seemed well stocked. House was so cutely decorated.

Great Home for a Weekend in Houghton

Wonderful Stay in Houghton!

Our family headed up to Houghton to hike and explore the outdoor region in the late fall. This was centrally located to all the hiking trails and was a beautiful home. Everything we needed was provided in the house and the host was exceptional in communicating. We especially loved the upstairs loft area which provided a nice space for us to hang out and do puzzling while it rained. Thank you for a great stay!

Very accommodating

Host was very accommodating considering we were arriving in the midst of a 12” snow storm. Location was perfect for touring MTU, I just wish we would have found the full house. The one thing our family of 4 could have utilized was a place for all of us to eat dinner together. But the price and the amount of beds was perfect for us. Next time we come into town we will inquire about the full unit.

Michigan Tech visit

Spent a long weekend exploring Houghton and visiting Michigan Tech. We loved staying at Birch House. So much better than cramming in a hotel! Plenty of room for our family to spread out. Well-stocked kitchen made meal prep easy. Plenty of special touches and attention to detail. Very clean and comfortable.

Long weekend visiting MTU

Our family, including grandma, spent a long weekend visiting Michigan Tech with our oldest. Checking was a breeze, the house was clean, and the location was great. It was like I was back in college, but the house was much cleaner and in better repair than I remember. My younger children loved the big sleeping/living/attic area. If my oldest decides to attend MTU in the Fall, we will be back.

Great location for MTU visits

This property was clean and convenient to the MTU and downtown Houghton area. Beds were comfortable and the upstairs loft area was a particular highlight for my kids. The only thing worth noting is that the kitchen can be a challenge. Counter space was cozy for cooking materials. The table only seats 2, requiring some advanced planning if you are hoping for a family meal. It would be perfectly fine for a couple, eating in shifts, or eating big meals out on the town. Despite that, we still enjoyed our stay very much!

Unique

This is a unique property. The home was very clean with all the amenities. Manager/owner reached out ahead of time to let us know they were available for needs. The unit we stayed in did not have an area that was functional for eating. It sleep 10 people but only 2 spots on high chairs to eat. Rules state no eating in other rooms so that was the only drawback. Otherwise a unique stay with clean accommodations!

Would Not Stay Again

When we booked the pictures are totally misleading. There is a giant staircase just to get to the level with the 2 bedrooms, 1bathroom, and a very small kitchen. Then go up a VERY narrow staircase to get to a open room with a tiny tv at one end. There is no actual tv stations just netflix. The floor is super uneven and walking down those stairs is going to get someone hurt. And the owner stalks around while your there. She constantly looks out the window and felt very awkward. Would not recommend to anyone.

Nice duplex in Houghton

It was a nice place to stay, very clean and convenient location to MTU and downtown Houghton. Enjoyed the old house charm, but it’s strange how it was converted into a duplex. Upon entering the foyer, there are two doors that lead to the owner’s place (presumably locked) and an open staircase to rental (no door). Additionally, there’s a bedroom window that’s on a shared wall with the owners. There are window coverings on both sides, but if they were open, owners could look into rental bedroom. Not sure why the window wasn’t removed when the addition was built on to the back of the house. Would be nice to have a living area on main level with kitchen, instead of having to go up in the attic. That being said, no place is perfect. This house has everything needed for a comfortable stay and I would recommend it to others.
