Big Canoe is a premier mountain community, conveniently located just one hour north of Atlanta, Georgia and metro area airports. Big Canoe is situated in a gated, resort like setting that includes 8,000+ acres of pristine woodlands, meadows, lakes and streams, and resort style amenities.
Big canoe offers championship golf courses, outdoor and two indoor tennis courts, ten pickleball courts and a fitness center with an indoor swimming pool. Take advantage of the three pristine mountain lakes, Lake Petit, Lake Sconti, and Lake Disharoon. Lake Petite features a full marina with Pontoon Boats, Jon Boats, Kayaks, and Paddle Boards available for rental. If fishing is your thing then check out Lake Petit’s 111 acres of open water that offers some of the best fishing Georgia has to offer. Lake Petit’s 100-foot water is known for its abundance of Rainbow Trout with the average trout running about 2lbs. Bass, Bluegill, Crappie, and Brim are also known to swim the waters of Lake Petit and Lake Sconti. Need to take a dip? Lake Disharoon features a fun sandy beach that also has an 110,000-gallon free-form outdoor pool that overlooks the lake. Don’t worry there is plenty of more fun to be had at the rock slides or at the Wildcat Recreation Center that also has a 104,000-gallon pool and kiddie pool. In need of an adventure try out the twenty plus miles of hiking trails that roll through creeks, waterfalls, and all of nature’s beauty. Just a short distance from Big Canoe is Amicalola Falls State Park which features an 829-acre state park home to the 729ft falls. Also located in Big canoe is a jeep trail that allows you to explore Big Canoe in a different way while in your 4WD vehicle. You’ll pass through creeks, old cabins and some great spots to have a picnic. Or join into the Open Play Pickleball offered several days a week.
One of the many great things about Big Canoe is its connection to the wildlife that also lives inside this peaceful community. Don’t be surprised to see Deer, Turkeys, Birds of all Variety, and yes Bears. The Black Bear is a long-time resident of Big Canoe and one of our most prevalent forms of wildlife, and the inspiration of our homes name.

Our family had a great stay! The house is cozy and well-stocked. The beds were so comfortable and the air conditioning worked very well. The owners were so helpful before we arrived in helping us plan where to eat and what to do while we stayed, and during our stay, they were very responsive if we had any questions or concerns. We would definitely stay here again.
We loved this place! Felt like we were in a tree house, but with A/C, comfy beds and everything for cooking/grilling amazing food! The owner was very responsive, the place was extremely clean and there were special added touches that the owner did to go above and beyond.
Every year we take a girls trip to Jasper and this year did not disappoint! The Christmas decor was perfect! The house was cozy and very comfy! Highly recommend!
Clean and cozy cabin in a great location. First timers in the area! We enjoyed the neighborhood trails. Thank you for the muffins and great information left for us to help our stay be more enjoyable.
Very clean property and great location. We love the tree toppers in Big Canoe and this is very well maintained property with a great and communicative owner. Would definitely recommend and return.
This is our second stay at Bearfeet Retreat and it did not disappoint. Comfortable, Cozy and Restful. Well appointed, clean and a treetopper view of the beautiful fall foliage. Thank you to the Rooney family for helping create good memories.
We had the best time in spite of the weather - cold and rainy. The “Treetopper” was so comfortable and cozy. We enjoyed ourselves and hope to return when the weather is prettier. Highly recommend this getaway.
This place was great and cozy! It was just enough room for my husband and myself plus the king size bed was very comfortable!
The only downfall was the Hott water, it didn’t stay Hott long enough for a relaxing tub bath.
Everything else was absolutely great and we can’t wait to come back!
Clean, cozy and comfortable. Bearfeet Retreat provides a panoramic view of the mountain treetops and vivid fall colors. If you are looking for a quiet couples getaway that provides rest and relaxation this place will not disappoint. Thank you Philip, you were a great host!
This darling little tree topper was just perfect for my friend and me. It was centrally located in Big Canoe, it was sparklingly clean, and it was decorated very tastefully. The furnishings were attractive and comfortable, including the mattresses, and we had everything we could ever need. We loved our time there!
Very clean space, well equipped, with comfortable bedding, and washer/dryer if needed. Interior bright and light. Would not recommend for small children due to interior spiral staircase . Owner seems to be in the process of making improvements to walkways and older decks. Excellent location for taking advantage of Big Canoe activities. Host left plenty of literature and maps for exploring/enjoying the surrounding area.
Our family of 5 had the best time at Bearfeet Retreat even though the weather was cold and rainy. We just moved to Georgia from Colorado and the mountain air and views made it feel like we were home. The property was so beautiful, clean, comfortable and cozy. The community and surrounding areas are amazing and we enjoyed all the views and hiking trails. Our kids loved the indoor pool too! Host was very responsive, extremely accommodating, attentive and provided numerous recommendations to us during our stay. Highly recommend this getaway. Thank you Rooney family! We hope to come back to stay here again!
I highly recommend this property! It is a very cute cabin. Our boys loved it and felt like they were staying in a treehouse. The community is great and we really enjoyed eating at the restaurant in the community clubhouse. It was very convenient. The cabin was clean and comfortable. The owner always responded quickly and had excellent communication. The book detailing community info in the cabin was extremely helpful. 10 out of 10!
The property was as advertised and clean. The property is well equipped just bring your food, drinks, and snacks. The location is located in a beautiful part of Georgia in an extremely large and fantastic private community. The roads throughout the community are recently paved and well maintained. However, a GPS equipped vehicle is recommended, as getting to the property is not easy if you only navigate by a map. Overall, it is a great place to stay and relax.
Very clean, host very responsive, lovely resort community. Nice hiking trails, people we met at Big Canoe all very friendly, would definitely like to come back in summer to use pool and lakefront beach. Convenient to Amicalola State Park. HVAC blower was very noisy white noise but maybe that’s just the contrast since everything else was so quiet and peaceful. overall 5 stars.
This was the perfect escape for the two of us. Originally we planned on some friends joining us but they couldn’t make it. The property was an amazing escape from the hustle and bustle of life. So great that two weeks later we still talk about it and wanting to return just to relax from the hustle and bustle. The host was extremely attentive leading up to our arrival and we had no need to contact them once we arrived. We miss the chili that was served at the club house as well. I would highly recommend this place!
My wife and adult son stayed here for three nights at the end of October. Big Canoe is a well-kept upscale resort community with lots of amenities. The unit was in a cluster of similarly built units but each had its own space on the slope of a wooded hill. It was comfortable and well outfitted including a propane fire "pit" - we made smores - and grill. The hiking - Amicolola Falls - and fishing - Lake Petit - in the community was great. One downside was seasonal hours for restaurants - in fall/winter, plan drive or cooking inside, which was fine.
As previous owners in Big Canoe we chose to return for 3 days to celebrate our 60th anniversary and spend time with Big Canoe friends reflecting on our many years in Big Canoe. Bearfeet Retreat was cozy and comfortable and provided all the necessities for our stay. Owners provide all the information you need to help you settle into the treetopper and to guide you to all the activities provided in Big Canoe. Of course, we were familiar with the many amenities but for the first time visitor, you will be well informed. Communication with Philip and Meg was excellent with quick response. We have to put a plug in for HOME restaurant located just outside the north gate. It is superb and has remained so for many many years. A must dining experience. Big Canoe will always have a special place in our life memories. Thanks Bearfeet Retreat for the welcoming bottle of champagne and for your hospitality. We’ll return in the future.
