About this property
Art, hiking, relaxing under the stars in Julian/Anza Borrego
The property is situated in the midst of the Anza Borrego Desert State Park approx. 2400ft above sea level. At this elevation the magnificent pines of Julian give way to a High Chaparral landscape with native Junipers, Desert Willows and mixed with Agave, Cacti and Creosote Bush giving the abundant wildlife cover from heat and cold. The Main Highway is the Great Overland Stage Route of 1849, from where a private drive takes you to a secluded cottage in Adobe Style and dedicated to the Native Indian Kokopelli figure, the flute player who brings luck, charm and mischief.
Julian, the Gold Mining Town, beckons to be explored just 20 minutes to the west, Borrego Springs, 20 minutes to the north east, offers the desert ambience with golf courses, club houses and restaurants. To the south you might try a dip in the Agua Caliente Hot Springs, or experience the freedom of soaring with a sailplane from Warner Springs Sail Plane Airport 25 minutes to the northwest.
For the R&R enthusiast there are many books to read, movies to watch, a private access to the Pacific Crest Hiking Trail and the Mountain in back of the property to be climbed.
You might enjoy the attached patio with a perfect view of the most magnificent sunsets, dipping the mountain ranges into the bluest blue of nature's palette. It might even inspire you to bring your painting easel, camera or sketch pad and record these moments on paper or film. At night you are in Dark Sky Country and the Milky Way offers spectacular picture-taking possibilities. We cater to professional photographers who bring their own telescopes.
If you are a private pilot you might try taking a picture of your plane, tied down next to the airstrip, bathed in the gold of the setting sun, you might even spot a coyote exploring its tires.
A quiet spot in the High Desert just under two hours from downtown San Diego and 3 1/2 hours from Los Angeles.

Quiet retreat we used to unplug and hang out as a family (adult kids). The house had everything we needed to cook simple meals. We hiked the area and enjoyed the beauty of the high desert landscape. The host is a talented artist and the collection of records was fun to discover and enjoy.
Our stay at Kokopelli's Hideaway was great. The guest house was very clean and had everything we needed during our stay. The location is quiet and peaceful. The owner was welcoming and helpful.
It’s located just outside of Anza Borrego and within close proximity of the park. The host, Rena, was very friendly and responsive to any questions we had.
Property was lovely. Ms. Reni welcomed us warmly and gave us a quick tour of the property. We had a lovely time enjoying the beautiful desert solitude.
The accomodations are perfect for people who can unplug from their electronics, read a book, take a nap, hike, enjoy peace and quiet, view the night sky, etc. A short drive to Julian or Anza for a change of scenery, or to the wineries makes this a perfect location.
Beautiful home in quiet setting. The owner was welcoming. We appreciated her flexibility with our checkout time. The home is filled with amazing artwork.Easy to reach Anza Borrego and Lake Cuyamaca.
Charming little adobe in the middle of the desert. Offers breathtaking views, beautiful stars, and all the hiking you can handle. Reni does an incredible job of supplying you with all the information to really explore and get to know the surrounding area. We will definitely be back!!
Very clean. It has everything you need in the kitchen and bathroom. There’s Heating and cooling and fans so it was great! Overall, the place itself is beautiful and the surroundings breathtaking!
If you love to see any meteor shower and you enjoy a bit of relaxing solitude...this is the place to come! Reni has created a little oasis in the middle of the desert. The place is cozy, well equipped and fiull of charm. Reni, our host is welcoming and very sweet. We can't wait to come back soon. It's one of our new favorite spots
We absolutely loved our stay. We wanted a location that where we could step outside and be in the desert and be able to see stars at night, and Kokopelli’s Hideaway checked all the boxes. We could walk out into the desert, observe desert flora and fauna, and access the Pacific Crest Trail. The house is clean and comfortable and beautifully decorated in a southwestern theme. Reni was a gracious host and provided us with a lot of information about the area. We hope to return for a longer stay.
Reni's casita just outside Anza Borrego State Park is a gem. Reni was a gracious and accommodating host who made us feel welcome. The little cottage was warm and full of color and interesting art, exactly as shown in the photos. Everything was immaculate and in good working order with all you would need to either cook or bring in your meals. I hope we will be able to return!
It’s a small space that the designer did a great job fitting everything. But the basics are covered: comfortable bed, good shower working stove and plenty of storage space. No AC which wasn’t an issue. I did use the space heater as the mornings were cold. I’d recommend replacing the one there with a quieter one. All together really good value.
Our first impression of the property was that it was unique and peaceful. Reni gave us a tour of all the features and amenities. The property exceeded our expectations. Reni recommended various places or interest, restaurants, and even which way to orient our seats to get the clearest view of the stars. The property was clean, well kept, and shows pride of ownership. The property owner is incredibly personable and welcoming. We are looking forward to returning during a meteor shower or when we need some true peace and quiet. 10/10 would recommend.
Our stay was most comfortable. It's a great location, near a wide variety of places to hike. Over four days, we explored the Borrego Palm Canyon (and saw the famed horned sheep), a slot canyon, chaparral, and fantastic views from the PCT. Ate well, having brought food to cook or pack three meals a day. Couldn't ask for more.
Super cute space with a very comfortable bed, lovely kitchen to work with, nestled into a very adorable town nearby with a cute main street and lots of shops to look at. We spent most of our time hiking, which was gorgeous.
It's nice to stay at a location that is true to the advertisement. Reni was super welcoming and helpful. The location is a bit isolated, but the star gazing was excellent.Casita is comfortably furnished, well cared for and full of whimsy and art. Borrego Springs is close, as is Julian, and both are worth day trips. A nice relaxing get away!!
